Q&A Session with SafeDNS Experts, Part 2

Welcome to the second part of the Q&A session with our experts, Tom Hall and Alex Biushkin! Today, they are addressing your questions and concerns regarding SafeDNS home products.

HOME USERS

Q:
Do you have a home product?

A: Sure, we offer two plans for home use: Safe Home and Safe Family. Both plans provide you with the possibility to use the service for an unlimited number of users, have access to Wi-Fi router filtering support, and receive internet usage statistics. Also, both plans guarantee 24/7 support.

Q:
Is there a home plan that will force a safe search on Google?

A: Force Safe Search is an additional option available on home plans. It can be turned on in the following way: Settings > Advanced. With this option enabled, all requests to Google or other search engines will be forced to use the Safe Search filter.

Q:
Will SafeDNS allow me to block platforms like Discord (both app and website), adult content sites, etc.?

A: Yes, sure! Just choose which category exactly you want to block in the Categories section. Also, you can restrict access to all the domains associated with a specific service in the App Blocker section with a single click.

Q:
All I need is something to block pornography and violence on my home Wi-Fi server. Will the SafeHome plan work? Or do I need the SafeFamily plan?

A: The Safe Home plan will be quite enough for you to filter inappropriate content. Safe Family will suit you as well, it offers a few more features: Agent support; the App Blocker Feature, which allows you to block a certain app or ecosystem without blocking the whole category; and the Internet Schedule, which helps you to flexibly manage Internet access depending on the time.

Q:
I’m trying out SafeDNS Home and have set up filtering on my router. I am also using the Safe Search option. The filtering is working well, but when I activate it, my Amazon Alexa devices on the network will not operate, although they are connected to Wi-Fi. Is there a particular setting in the filter options to stop this from happening?

A: The first option here is to add the domains of a needed service to the Allowlist, which is on the main menu. But if we talk about this particular case, you should know that Amazon Alexa is categorized as Computers & Internet (which can be found in the General Sites section). You can keep this category unblocked to always have access to the service.

Defending Your Network from 1xBet

1xBet is an online betting platform offering sports betting, casinos, and other games. It is recognized as illegal in many countries, including France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Israel, the US, etc. That means internet service providers across the world (especially in areas where gambling in general is beyond the law) face such an online security challenge as restricting access to 1xBet resources.

The Elusive Nature of 1xBet

Blocking 1xBet is quite a difficult task since the platform operates in a unique way, adapting its functionality based on various factors, including user location and app version. This adaptability makes it challenging to employ traditional blocking mechanisms, requiring a more sophisticated approach.

The major aspect of
1xBet
is that it
has spawned numerous resources with similar themes and functions,
operating under different names.
However, it is important not to get confused and understand that all these resources are connected with or derived from the core 1xBet platform. This understanding is essential for crafting effective defense strategies.

Log Analysis

Our team analyzed the logs to identify the domains the app accesses. The impressive part of the way the platform works is its ability to bypass domain blocking. When certain domains or even lists of domains are blocked, the 1xBet app resumes its operation within minutes. It either gets new sources during updates or requests domains from specific sources.

Location-Based Adaptability

The app’s behavior is also influenced by the user’s location. By checking the device’s location, 1xBet selects the appropriate display language. We must say that changing the language doesn’t significantly affect the domains the app accesses. In cases where the device’s location differs from the Geo IP-based one, the app requests permission to access data from Geo IP or GPS, and depending on the location, it accesses different domain names.

Domain Generation Algorithm

During research, it was discovered that all identified domains constantly change depending on the app version and are generated using a domain generation algorithm. Besides, similar or previously used domains were found to be utilized by other apps that resemble or relate to 1xBet.

SafeDNS’s Proactive Approach

It is essential to highlight that
SafeDNS is able to block both the web version of the site and the mobile app.
At the moment, our team has fully developed an automated process to detect the domain names that the 1xBet app accesses.

We are also actively researching the ways used by the service to bypass blocking mechanisms. This is done as a proactive measure to stay ahead and anticipate any changes made to the app’s mechanisms. It’s important to mention that since the service generates many different domains in various regions to prevent blocking, not every filtering service can recognize and classify these newly created domains as gambling. However, SafeDNS is different. Our technology, powered by AI and machine learning, is capable of instantly identifying and blocking these types of sources.

If you have any questions or require assistance regarding the blocking of 1xBet, our team is always ready to help.

Stay protected with SafeDNS!

SafeDNS Website Categorization Database 101

Seems like it is high time to learn about the SafeDNS database, a solution that can be exceptionally helpful in making the services you provide even more attractive. Here are the essentials you might want to know about it.

What is the SafeDNS Database?

SafeDNS offers an encrypted database of millions of domains categorized into 66 different categories. The key purpose of this solution is to provide the category of a specific domain by its URL upon request. Our database currently contains 104 million domain names. Crawlers, along with data obtained from using the database, ensure that it is updated daily with thousands of domain names. We put quality above quantity and care not only about the number of domains added daily, but also pay great attention to the URL classification and categorization process to ensure that it is detailed and seamless.

Access Options & Use Cases

We offer three convenient ways to access the SafeDNS database.

The first way of accessing the database is Categorization API, designed to provide developers and third-party systems with an online way to get the data they need. This type of access allows seamless integration with other systems that require site category verification. There are 2 subtypes of Categorization API: X-API and Y-API.

X-API is the easiest one in terms of incorporation and use. Its processing speed is 1000 requests per second. In order to maintain it, the data provided by X-API can be cached on the side of the integrated system for a period of no more than 12 hours. Besides, AI is integrated into the system, which enhances its capabilities. With the database being refreshed every 24 hours, it ensures that users have the most up-to-date information at their disposal.

Y-API is a combination of SDK и X-API, possessing all the best features these two options have. It is deployed locally within the client’s circuit and installed in the client’s Docker container. Y-API can be a perfect choice in case you need online access with a higher processing speed (up to 15000 requests per second) than X-API demonstrates.

The third option is Categorization SDK. This offline version is ideal for those who prefer to have a local database that can be downloaded onto devices, granting quick and convenient access without the need for a constant internet connection. SDK is easy enough to integrate into the final software product developed in C or Python. An advantage of this option is an increased network bandwidth. Its processing speed is 70 000 requests per second.

What Is This Solution for?

SafeDNS provides the option of using the database as an independent product in several areas. It can be particularly useful for internet service providers, endpoint protection vendors that have their own infrastructure but need a full-fledged and regularly updated database to be integrated into their filtration systems.

Another use case is database integration into DLP (Data Loss Prevention) and DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) systems via SDK in particular, and Internet providers in general. This option can be helpful in categorizing decrypted traffic to get deeper analytics and meet regulatory requirements. New Generation Firewalls and UTM providers can also have the SDK-type database integrated.

Since the processing speed of SDK is much higher, it is a perfect solution for service providers and platforms that need to handle a huge number of requests.

Our database, especially the X-API option, can be used both as a primary categorization tool and as a supplement for local market actors to enhance protection and the quality of foreign domain categorization. It is also suitable for solutions with parental control functions.

How Much Does It Cost?

Our billing system is flexible, it allows users to pay as they go based on their specific business needs and the number of requests they make. This ensures that customers only pay for the services they use, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses of all sizes.

SafeDNS offers a powerful database that assists companies in managing web access effectively. By leveraging the SafeDNS solution, businesses can enhance their security measures and ensure a safer and more controlled web browsing experience for their users.

Web Security Challenges in Hospitality Business: A Case for Cloud Web Filtering

In the fast-paced world of hospitality, where customer satisfaction is of utmost importance, the digital landscape presents both opportunities and risks. Nowadays, hotels and restaurants experience a huge amount of online challenges: they become targets for cybercriminals due to their handling of sensitive data and face reputational risks associated with guests’ online experiences.

Understanding the evolving digital problems landscape and taking preventative measures such as content filtering is paramount to protecting businesses from potentially catastrophic outcomes.

The Allure of Hospitality for Hackers

Hospitality organizations store a lot of valuable information, making them attractive targets for cybercriminals. Installing malware on POS systems allows hackers to steal customers’ credit card information, causing significant reputational and financial damage to businesses. Moreover, the growing trend of ransomware attacks, where hackers paralyze systems and demand large ransoms for restoration, can result in million-dollar losses and occupancy declines of 80–90%.

Alarming Statistics: A Wake-Up Call for the Hospitality Industry

Recent research emphasizes the severity of the issue, revealing that 67% of accommodation and food businesses have fallen victim to cyberattacks. This places the industry in third place, behind only the education and arts, entertainment, and recreation sectors. Despite this alarming statistic, many businesses focus their investments on only traditional security systems and practices, often overlooking the critical human factor.

The Human Element: A Vulnerability Exploited

Latest ransomware attacks on the HoReCa sector (е.g., MGM and Caesar cases) emphasize that people might be the weakest link in the cybersecurity chain. Hackers can identify, for instance, a random tech employee of the target company and here we are: within 10-15 minutes they get access to the systems. The simplicity of many attacks usually relies on such tactics as tricking people into clicking on suspicious links and inputting credentials. This is reason enough to reflect on the critical need for employee training and measures that can prevent users from accessing potentially malicious resources.

Battles Against Explicit Content

Apart from cyberattacks, the restaurant and hospitality industry frequently faces a distinct online challenge — the potential for reputational harm in case guests encounter explicit content during their stay. Given that hotels and restaurants are typically chosen as venues for family outings or holidays, the expectation is that their networks should remain free from inappropriate content.

DNS Security Best Practices

What is DNS Security?

DNS security,

often referred to as DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions), is a set of protocols and techniques designed to protect the DNS from various threats and vulnerabilities. The primary goal of DNS security is to ensure the integrity, authenticity, and confidentiality of DNS data. By doing so, it helps prevent malicious activities such as DNS spoofing, cache poisoning, and man-in-the-middle attacks that can redirect users to fake websites or compromise their data.

Why DNS Security Is Important

DNS security is vital for preventing disruptions in operations. Any disruption to a business’s online presence can have devastating consequences. DNS attacks, such as DDoS attacks or cache poisoning, can render websites and services inaccessible. DNS security measures, including robust DNS hosting and protection, mitigate these risks, ensuring uninterrupted operations and customer access to primary and secondary DNS servers. Moreover, DNS security protects sensitive data. DNS queries contain sensitive information about the websites users intend to visit, and without adequate security, these queries can be intercepted by malicious actors. Implementing DNS security ensures the confidentiality of DNS data, and protects user privacy.

Without DNS security, there are risks of phishing and fraud. Cybercriminals often use DNS to conduct phishing attacks. Malicious actors create deceptive websites with domain names similar to legitimate ones, tricking users into revealing personal information. DNS security measures help detect and block these fraudulent domains, reducing the risk of phishing and fraud incidents.

In addition, many industries and jurisdictions have specific regulations and compliance requirements related to data protection and cybersecurity. Implementing DNS security measures can help companies meet these legal obligations and avoid enormous fines for non-compliance related to IP addresses and DNS settings.

DNS Security Best Practices

Log all DNS activities: Maintain detailed logs of DNS queries and responses to monitor for suspicious activities and troubleshoot issues effectively. Analyze these logs regularly to detect security vulnerabilities and respond to potential threats.

Keep the DNS cache locked: Make sure that cached data in your DNS server is secure and not vulnerable to cache poisoning attacks. Implement measures to prevent unauthorized access or manipulation of the cache.

Configure access control lists (ACL) precisely: Implement strict ACLs to control which devices and networks are allowed to access and use your DNS servers. Only authorized users and systems should have access to internal DNS servers.

Regularly update the DNS server: Remember to update your DNS server software regularly and keep it patched to address known vulnerabilities and security weaknesses. Stay informed about security advisories related to your specific DNS server software.

Deploy dedicated DNS applications: Use dedicated DNS server software designed for security and performance, such as BIND, Microsoft DNS, or other reputable options, rather than repurposing general-purpose servers.

Implement DNSSEC (DNS Security Extensions): DNSSEC adds a layer of security by digitally signing DNS records, ensuring data integrity and authenticity. Enforce DNSSEC for your domains to protect against DNS spoofing and cache poisoning attacks and validate DNS data integrity.

Mask the primary DNS server and information: Hide the identity of your primary DNS server and its version number to minimize the risk of attackers targeting known vulnerabilities in your DNS software.

Time limit the recursive DNS query response: Set a time limit for how long your DNS server will spend processing a recursive query. This helps prevent your server from being tied up by malicious or excessive requests.

Facilitate random DNS socket pool utilization: Configure your DNS server to use a random selection of source ports and request IDs to make it harder for attackers to predict and spoof DNS responses.

Ensure DNS availability with adept redundancy: Implement redundant DNS servers to maintain service availability even if one server becomes compromised or goes offline. Use load balancing and failover mechanisms for seamless DNS operation.

Reinforce the name servers: Secure the physical and network infrastructure of your name servers. Limit physical access, use strong authentication for administrative access, and employ firewalls and intrusion detection systems.

Filter and Monitor DNS Traffic: Employ DNS traffic filtering to block known malicious domains and monitor DNS traffic for anomalies and suspicious patterns. Tools like DNS filtering services and intrusion detection systems can be useful for this purpose.

In addition to these best practices, it’s important to stay updated on the latest DNS security threats, as this landscape evolves continuously. Regular security audits, penetration testing, and employee training can also help ensure the overall security of your DNS infrastructure.

DNS security is a critical component of a robust cybersecurity strategy. By implementing DNS security best practices, you can protect your organization’s online presence, maintain user trust, and ensure the availability and integrity of your online services. Remember that security is an ongoing process, and staying vigilant against emerging threats is key to a secure DNS infrastructure.

Digital Hygiene Guide for B2B Companies

With cyber threats becoming highly sophisticated, it is important for organizations to maintain a strong defense against potential attacks. As cybersecurity experts, we at SafeDNS understand the value and significance of digital hygiene for businesses. Today we will explore three key lines of defense in cybersecurity and review rules that B2B companies must implement to ensure a safe and secure online environment.

Good digital hygiene is the proactive approach that B2B companies must adopt to ensure the cleanliness, security, and overall well-being of their digital assets, data, and online activities across multiple platforms. In the fast-paced world of B2B interactions, it’s extremely important to recognize that the vast majority of business operations now take place in the digital realm. Fundamental ways to maintain good digital hygiene include data security measures, online reputation management strategies, and compliance with industry regulations. By prioritizing these aspects, B2B companies can protect themselves from cyber threats, build trust among clients and partners, maintain a positive brand image, and ensure the efficient functioning of their digital operations.

The first line of defense is password and confidential data security. To ensure the basis of data hygiene is solid, check to see if you have done all you should have done to keep your data safe.

  • It is crucial to apply a strict policy that requires a certain minimum password length and complexity for any account.
  • Using different accounts and passwords to access different resources and utilizing multi-factor authentication are essential steps to enhance digital hygiene.
  • Default credentials must be changed for equipment within the network, e.g., admin:admin.
  • Provide each employee with their own accounts with strictly defined access rights to resources, especially when employees use the same workplace and device. Try to minimize user privileges whenever possible.
  • Probably the most obvious yet problematic point: stop storing sensitive information in the clear or in the public domain!
  • Regular backups are our everything: create backup copies of systems and store them on dedicated servers separate from the network segments of work systems. In the event of a cyberattack or data breach, having a reliable backup system and a well-defined disaster recovery plan is crucial.
  • Key lesson to learn: work to increase employee awareness of data security. The more seriously you take this point, the fewer problems you will encounter.

The second defense line, the one you should take most seriously, is your technical means. To be sure that no threat can cross this line, we recommend you use:

  • automated tools for security analysis and identification of software vulnerabilities;
  • web application firewalls as a primary measure to protect web resources;
  • systems for in-depth analysis of network traffic, which help detect complex targeted attacks both in real time and in saved copies of traffic;
  • specialized anti-DdoS services;
  • anti-virus protection systems with a sandbox, a built-in isolated environment, for dynamic file scanning, capable of identifying and blocking malicious files in corporate email before they are opened by employees;
  • SIEM solutions: for timely detection and effective response to information security incidents.

The last line is system security. What can be done to ensure the security of this line of defense? Let’s have a look at the ways of protection.

  • We strongly recommend that you conduct regular penetration tests to timely identify new attack vectors on internal infrastructure and evaluate the effectiveness of the protection measures taken.
  • Also, it is important to analyze the security of web applications regularly, including source code analysis, in order to identify and eliminate vulnerabilities to attacks, including on application clients.
  • Monitor the number of requests to resources per second and set up the configuration of servers and network devices in such a way as to neutralize typical attack scenarios (e.g., TCP and UDP floods or multiple requests to DB).
  • Promptly update the software you use as patches are released.
  • Control the appearance of unsafe resources on the network perimeter; regularly conduct an inventory of resources available for connection from the Internet; analyze the security of such resources; and eliminate vulnerabilities in the software used.
  • Do not forget about filtering! It is crucial for your company’s web security to use content and email filtering to protect against phishing sites, resources that distribute viruses, DNS spoofing, and hidden miners.

Remember, digital hygiene is an ongoing process that requires constant vigilance. Implementing the practices mentioned above is a great start, but it is also essential to stay updated on the increasing number of threats and adapt your security measures accordingly.

By prioritizing digital hygiene and implementing proactive security measures, B2B companies can minimize the risk of cyberattacks, protect sensitive business data, and build trust among clients and partners, which is fundamental in today’s world.

Invest in your company’s digital hygiene and overall health today and safeguard your business against the ever-evolving threat landscape!

New Additions to SafeDNS Categories

We have some great news to share with you! SafeDNS categories have just been expanded. With a total of 66 categories now available, it’s easier than ever to restrict access to specific types of websites with just a single click.

Let’s introduce you to the three new categories that have been added.

Generative AI: this category includes websites of popular AI services, chatbots, and text/picture generators. Recognizing these kinds of web sources as a separate category allows users to manage access to AI services, which is particularly relevant for educational organizations today.

Unknown Sites is probably the most anticipated category created to ensure a secure online environment by identifying and analyzing websites that are not yet in our database. Here is the way it works: when you click on a link that is not in the SafeDNS database, a series of machine learning models is launched to check it through. In case the system has not encountered the existing domain before, you are redirected to a blockpage, while the domain itself is “quarantined” and its content is thoroughly scanned. Later, based on the scan and a series of additional checks, the website is assigned a specific category. Unknown sites do not necessarily pose a direct threat, but we strongly recommend you enable this category on your cybersecurity list as the probability of their harmful impact is high anyway.

Contentless Domains: the category includes websites that lack meaningful or legitimate content, unlike Parked Domains, which consist of registered but not used websites displaying advertising content or redirecting to other domains with such content. If you wind up on a contentless domain, you see either an error message or an empty page. While contentless domains themselves may not pose immediate security threats, they can be vulnerable to malicious takeovers. A contentless domain might become a source of malicious software (that is later to be installed on your device) or redirect you to potentially harmful websites. Some services may not identify this kind of domain as dangerous. But not SafeDNS. Enable the Contentless Domains category and protect yourself from all the potential risks mentioned.

As you see, this expanded selection of categories allows users to fine-tune filtering settings with greater precision to meet quite specific security and content control requirements. With more categories at your disposal, there is no chance your online security is in danger!

Stay protected, stay with SafeDNS!

Cybersecurity Risks in Remote Work

In recent years, remote work has become increasingly prevalent, allowing employees to work from the comfort of their homes. However, with this convenience comes a heightened risk of cybersecurity threats, with phishing attacks leading the pack. Unlike traditional office settings where IT teams handle cybersecurity, in remote work security, workers must take the initiative to protect themselves and their organizations.

  • Since the shift to remote work, ransomware attacks have increased by 20%
  • 63% of businesses have experienced a data breach due to remote employees
  • 80% of organizations have seen an increase in email phishing attacks since remote working began

These statistics serve as a clear warning about the critical significance of cybersecurity in the context of remote work. They underscore the imperative for organizations to prioritize and invest in robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard their corporate network, digital assets and sensitive information. It is essential for employers to ascertain that their corporate networks are fortified with the latest security protocols and that employees are equipped with secure devices for remote network access. Neglecting these precautions exposes organizations to the heightened cybersecurity risks of remote working, such as data security, cyberattacks and data breaches. These statistics should serve as a resounding call to action for employers to take proactive steps in fortifying their network defenses, thereby safeguarding both their critical data and the well-being of their remote workforce.

Remote work environment can be particularly vulnerable to various threats. Let’s examine these risks and explore strategies to mitigate them.

Remote Working Risks & Mitigation

  • Weak Passwords and Lack of Multi-Factor Authentication:

Weak passwords and the absence of multi-factor authentication (MFA) are a significant concern in remote work scenarios. Cybercriminals often target accounts with easily guessable passwords, making it crucial to use strong, unique passwords for all online business accounts. Implementing MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring users to provide two or more forms of authentication, such as a password and a one-time code sent to their mobile device. This additional step can significantly up their security solutions to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive data.

  • Unsecured Wi-Fi Networks:

Employers should be aware that remote workers frequently connect to various Wi-Fi networks, including public hotspots. These networks are often less secure than corporate virtual private networks, making them a prime target for hackers. To mitigate this risk, employers can implement a web filtering solution within their organization’s network infrastructure. Web filtering tools can help block access to malicious websites and filter out harmful content, reducing the chances of employees encountering threats while connected to unsecured networks. Additionally, employers can encourage their remote workforce to use VPNs and ensure that employees’ home Wi-Fi networks are secured with strong passwords. This proactive approach enhances overall cybersecurity for remote teams.

  • Phishing Detection and Notification:

Phishing attacks have become increasingly sophisticated, and remote workers are not immune to them. Recognizing phishing attempts is crucial. Train employees to identify suspicious emails, links, and requests for personal sensitive information. Employ advanced email filtering and security tools to detect and block phishing attempts before they reach the inbox.

  • Lack of Security Updates:

One common oversight in remote work environments is neglecting to update software and operating systems promptly. Outdated software can contain known vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can exploit. Enable automatic antivirus software updates and regularly check for patches and updates to ensure your devices are protected with the latest security measures.

  • Data Backup and Recovery:

Data loss can be disastrous, especially in remote work scenarios where sensitive company data from personal computers may be scattered across various devices and locations. Implement a robust data backup and recovery strategy. Regularly back up critical data to secure, remote servers or cloud or centralized storage solutions, and test the restoration process to ensure that data can be recovered in case of an incident.

  • Insufficient Employee Training:

Remote workers must be adequately trained in cybersecurity best practices. Invest in cybersecurity training programs to educate employees about the various security risks that they may encounter while working remotely. Training should cover topics such as identifying phishing attempts, password security, and secure file sharing.

Cybersecurity Checklist for Employees

  • Are your home devices protected by comprehensive antivirus and internet security software?
  • Have you taken steps to secure your devices, ensuring encryption is enabled, and you’ve activated features like “Find my device” and remote wipe?
  • Are you using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for secure connections?
  • Have you secured your home Wi-Fi network with strong encryption and a unique password?
  • Are your passwords strong, unique, and regularly updated?
  • Do you stay vigilant against phishing scams, refraining from clicking on unfamiliar links or opening unsolicited email attachments?
  • Is your operating system up-to-date and supported by regular updates?
  • Do you keep all software on your devices, including applications and programs, updated to the latest versions?
  • Have you enabled two-factor authentication where applicable?

Cybersecurity Checklist for Employers

  • Do you have a documented work from home security policy?
  • Do you have a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy?
  • Do you provide cybersecurity awareness training to employees?
  • Are you ensuring that staff use a VPN, and is it up to date with security patches?
  • Do you encourage centralized data storage and regular data backups?
  • Do you equip company devices with approved antivirus and internet security software?
  • Do you promote strong passwords and consider password manager usage?
  • Do you encourage two-factor authentication?
  • Do you use encryption software to protect company data?

In conclusion, we haven’t reached a final destination in remote work, and the future brings new challenges, security threats, and opportunities. Organizations have to make choices. They might consider going back to traditional offices with better security control, but that might not be practical in our remote-friendly world. So, it’s essential to keep updating and strengthening security controls and measures.

There’s also the idea of giving remote workers the tools to secure their personal devices and home networks as well as office environments. This might become necessary in the future to protect sensitive data.

Staying alert, informed, and ready can help both individuals and organizations navigate remote work challenges while keeping their digital environments safe.
