Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts – The Daily Slog
The word “hero” gets thrown around a lot, but not usually for your average Network Administrator. However, if people knew how much work it truly takes to keep your corporate network humming along (securely, of course), there would probably be a national holiday. Maybe even a parade.
While you might not get the appreciation from the general public you deserve, Portnox has your back – we’ve created a new tool called Switch Commander to make everyday network administration tasks a little bit easier. Now you have one easy-to-use UI that covers all your switches.
And the best part – this tool is FREE! No trials, no credit card needed-just download it and become the commander of all your switches.
Vendor Agnostic
With Switch Commander, all you have to do is add your switch – we support SNMP v1/v2 and v3, Telnet, SSH, and HTTP/S logins. Once you’ve added all your devices, you can do simple daily administrative tasks like assigning ports to specific VLANs or seeing the status of all ports on the switch. The awesome thing is you don’t have to worry about command syntax – if your network is a combination of several different vendors (like 81% of the users we surveyed), you won’t have to remember if it’s shutdown, disable, or no power.

Getting Started with Switch Monitoring & Management
So, now that you’ve got your switches added – what can you do?
A good place to start is the Probe command – this will download all information from the switch and show it to you in a table format (the probe results are shown in the white area on the left in the screenshot above). You can see all ports, including their associated VLAN ID, and the MAC address of what is connected to them.
The Output panel (on right-hand side of the screenshot below) will show you a detailed overview of actions performed on the switch, and the Action panel shows the OID commands executed on the switch when an action is performed. This is super helpful if you’re using an SNMP-based switch monitoring system and need to see if a particular OID is supported.
From here you can enable or disable a port and set or change the VLAN.

Least Privileged, Most Useful
Another huge advantage is that once you’ve added in your switches, you can give other IT staff access to Switch Commander without having to give them credentials to the switches themselves. The login information for each device is encrypted and stored in the Switch Commander database, which has its own separate login. Now it’s safe to have your junior admin turn ports on and off or move VLANs around without them having the keys to the whole kingdom. You can also filter results so that one switch that has 10,000 ports isn’t so cumbersome to search through.
Lookin’ Fancy!
Look, if you have to stare at a screen all day, the least you can do is make it look nice with your favorite colors, right? And maybe throw on dark mode when it feels like your eyes just need a break from super bright white backgrounds! Well, Switch Commander has several different themes and skins you can choose from, so you can customize the look and feel to how you want it without burning your retinas.
Switch Monitoring & Management with Switch Commander
Doing basic network admin tasks on your switches may not save the world, but Switch Commander will save you valuable time keeping your network humming along, and that’s still pretty great. Download Switch Commander for free today and see how easy it can make your regular switch administration tasks.

Why we chose Astro for our marketing websites

Problems with our existing stack
My team at Nord Security is responsible for building and maintaining websites for the fastest VPN in the world, NordVPN. We have multiple marketing sites built by different people at different times. Some were made with Gatsby, and others with WordPress and a home-grown React-based SSG (static-site generator).
Those websites served us well. However, rapid scaling has caused issues with website performance, which has a direct impact on sales and marketing. It’s a proven fact that a reduction in website performance (for example, slower load times) decreases sales. This has been demonstrated in studies from WPO Stats.
As the business scaled, my team had the challenging task of researching and proposing a tech stack to rebuild our websites and achieve optimal marketing potential.
A challenge
There was a lot of work to be done. We had more than 20 locales, 10 currencies, and thousands of pages. Personalization had to be considered, and A/B testing implemented. Supporting an ever-expanding list of requirements while still achieving optimal performance felt like an impossible goal.
We tried different frameworks — Next.js, Preact, SvelteKit, and Elder.js — and even tried building server-side rendering and island architecture with Svelte. We had to find the best systems to satisfy the needs of content editors, data analysts, and engineers.
Of course, it’s not every day that a team gets a chance to rebuild their websites from scratch. We knew we could create something great, so we wanted to make the most of this opportunity.
Enter: Astro
As our research continued, it became clear that Astro, an all-in-one web framework, ticked all our boxes. We had initially ruled out Astro because it didn’t offer server-side rendering, but when this feature was added in 2022, we knew that we’d found our framework.
Astro is not a mainstream framework, of course, and when we were considering it, the framework was still in beta. Going down this route was a risk, but it was one we were willing to take. Why? Because not only did it fulfill almost all of our requirements, but it already had a vibrant and active community and a responsive developer team. New features are planned, implemented, and delivered several times a week.
Along with server-side rendering, Astro’s developers had added Node.js support and edge deployment. These factors facilitate streamlined continuous deployment and enhance the power of a globally deployed content delivery network, allowing for unmatched performance. Edge deployment with Cloudflare, Vercel, and Netlify involves only a few simple steps, but the impact is huge.
With just a few lines of code, we now had server-side rendering enabled on our desired deployment server:

Benefits of Astro
During the research phase, we noted that Svelte syntax, being a superset of HTML, was much easier to work with than React syntax. The same went for Astro. We have hundreds of different components to implement, most of which require little to no JavaScript, so being able to convert them to the HTML-style syntax of Astro made those components more readable.
The complex components that required client-side JavaScript and reactivity were another story. Our main requirement of reaching optimal website performance pushed us to try something new: SolidJS.
SolidJS is performant-reactive and simple for building user interfaces. It uses JSX syntax, works well for server-side rendering, and offers outstanding performance. It does all this with a fraction of the size of other libraries that usually come shipped with a browser.
Furthermore, both Astro and SolidJS share the concept of so-called vanishing components. Components exist to organize your code and not much else. What is shipped to the client is pure HTML and CSS.
Client-side JavaScript is an opt-in feature in Astro. Unless you specifically use one of the client directives, the component is shipped with 0kb of JavaScript. Of course, you also have the option to bundle global or local scripts straight from the component code.
SolidJS and other framework components are inserted into Astro files using the “islands architecture” pattern. The pattern was proposed by Katie Sylor-Miller in 2019 and is expanded in this post by Preact creator Jason Miller.
Here are the possible client directives for making “islands” interactive:
client:load — Loads JavaScript and hydrates the component on page load.
client:idle — Loads JavaScript and hydrates the component after page load once the main thread is idle.
client:visible — Embraces the power of Intersection Observer API and loads JavaScript only if the component becomes visible.
client:media — Useful in cases where certain components should be visible and interactive only on certain screen sizes.
client:only — Skips server-side rendering and runs the code on the client. Be careful with this one because it can push down your SEO scores.
Some parts of the page can be fully static, without any JavaScript needed, while other parts, or islands, may require JavaScript. The process of resolving the component state is called hydration.
Though the JavaScript community is still split over whether hydration is the right approach compared to resumability, it solves our current problems nicely. More information about the hydration topic can be found in this great article.
With Astro, islands come with another benefit: various component framework support. It offers flexibility when choosing a UI framework and has integrations to work with React, Svelte, SolidJS, and Vue. Of course, you won’t typically mix those, but it gives you flexibility and room to maneuver.
The results
To see how well it worked, check out the Lighthouse scores for one of our new websites:

The other projects integrated well with our Cloudflare Pages, and more will be built soon!
The pace of releases, weekly community calls, RFCs, the involvement of the core team, and its vibrant community all serve to confirm that we made the right choice with Astro.

Masquerading as a translation app, Furball spyware goes after Iranian citizens, ESET Research finds
ESET researchers recently identified a new version of the Android malware FurBall being used in a Domestic Kitten campaign.
The Domestic Kitten campaign is ongoing, dating back to at least 2016.
It mainly targets Iranian citizens.
We discovered a new, obfuscated Android Furball sample used in the campaign.
It is distributed using a copycat website.
The analyzed sample has only restricted spying functionality enabled, to stay under the radar.
BRATISLAVA, KOŠICE — OCTOBER 20, 2022 — ESET researchers recently identified a new version of the Android malware FurBall being used in a Domestic Kitten campaign conducted by the APT-C-50 group. The Domestic Kitten campaign is known to conduct mobile surveillance operations against Iranian citizens, and this new FurBall version is no different in its targeting. Since June 2021, it has been distributed as a translation app via a copycat of an Iranian website that provides translated articles, journals, and books. The Domestic Kitten campaign is still ongoing, dating back to at least 2016.
This version of FurBall has the same surveillance functionality as previous versions. Since the functionality of this variant hasn’t changed, the main purpose of this update appears to be to avoid detection by security software. These modifications have had no effect on ESET software, however; ESET products detect this threat as Android/Spy.Agent.BWS. FurBall – Android malware used in this operation since these campaigns began – is created based on the commercial stalkerware tool KidLogger.
The analyzed sample requests only one intrusive permission – to access contacts. The reason could be its aim to stay under the radar; on the other hand, we also think it might signal it is just the preceding phase, of a spearphishing attack conducted via text messages. If the threat actor expands the app permissions, it would also be capable of exfiltrating other types of data from affected phones, such as SMS messages, device location, recorded phone calls, and much more.
“This malicious Android application is delivered via a fake website mimicking a legitimate site that provides articles and books translated from English to Persian (downloadmaghaleh.com). Based on the contact information from the legitimate website, they provide this service from Iran, which leads us to believe with high confidence that the copycat website targets Iranian citizens,” says ESET researcher Lukáš Štefanko, who discovered the malware.
“The purpose of the copycat is to offer an Android app for download after clicking on a button that says, in Persian, ‘Download the application’. The button has the Google Play logo, but this app is not available from the Google Play store; it is downloaded directly from the attacker’s server,” he adds.

ESET Science Award 2022 Laureates announced, led by Nobel Prize Laureate Ada Yonath
BRATISLAVA — October 19, 2022 — For the fourth year running, the ESET Foundation announces the Laureates of the ESET Science Award, an award for scientific and educational personalities of science from Slovakia with a global impact. This year, the laureates were selected by an international jury chaired by Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Ada Yonath.
Professor Silvia Pastoreková from the Biomedical Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences has won in the main category of Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia. The laureate of the Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia Under the Age of 35 category is Miroslav Almáši and Professor Ľubomír Tomáška received the award in the Outstanding Academic in Slovakia category.
“I am glad that among the finalists of the award there are many talented personalities. I wish all of them to be rewarded for their curiosity, because that is what pushes the boundaries of knowledge,” said Ada Yonath, chair of the international committee.
The theme of this year’s gala was the story of women in science. “This topic is close to our hearts. As a software company, we strive to increase the proportion of women in the company and across the industry. I believe that diversity is essential for innovation and progress in any field. People with different views coming from different backgrounds bring different perspectives to whatever challenges we face as humanity, including the big scientific questions. This is also why the role of women is indispensable, not only in science,” explains Richard Marko, CEO of ESET. Showcasing continuous progress in the industry, this year, ESET is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the company’s establishment and the 35th anniversary of its award-winning technology.
In addition to Professor Ada Yonath, members of the international committee included Swiss materials scientist Anke Weidenkaff, Ukrainian materials chemist Yury Gogotsi, Dutch oncologist and researcher Rob Pieters and German particle physicist Manfred Lindner. The gala was attended by the President of the Slovak Republic, Zuzana Čaputová, under whose auspices the Award takes place, as well the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Eduard Heger, and by special guest astrophysicist Garik Israelian, the founder of the STARMUS World Festival.
The Laureates
Silvia Pastoreková, Laureate of the category Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia
Silvia Pastoreková works at the Biomedical Centre of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. She researches the mechanisms by which tumor cells adapt to oxygen deprivation and investigates the possibilities of their use in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In collaboration with a broader team, she discovered a protein that is found on the surface of tumor cells but is not present in healthy cells. Based on genetic information, this protein has been classified into a family of so-called carbonic anhydrases and given the name CA9. Using an antibody to CA9, which Silvia Pastoreková prepared, the team of Oxford scientists Adrian L. Harris and the current Nobel Prize winner Peter J. Ratcliffe showed that CA9 is formed in tumor cells in the absence of oxygen – hypoxia.
The Slovak team’s research subsequently led to original findings on the role of CA9 in the adaptation of tumor cells to hypoxia through changes in metabolism and the ability to form metastases. In collaboration with clinical oncologists, they showed that CA9 is found on tumors from different tissue types. The discovery of CA9 is an important contribution to research into the mechanisms of cancer initiation and progression. Silvia Pastoreková and her team have developed unique antibodies that can recognize this protein in tumor tissue. They are used to diagnose cancer and detect more advanced tumors. They are now in development as therapeutics.
More information about Silvia Pastoreková can be found HERE.
Miroslav Almáši, Laureate of the category Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia Under the Age of 35
Miroslav Almáši works at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in Košice, Slovakia. He is dedicated to the preparation of new porous materials. One of the possible applications of their research is the absorption of heavy metals. Similarly, they can also pick up other molecules from water, such as antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals, which cannot be easily removed from water and can have negative consequences for health.
Another important use of porous materials is to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it. The research by Miroslav Almáši and his team could be used to filter air. Porous materials could capture CO2 molecules, which could then be converted into, for example, methanol for further industry use. Another area of research looks at hydrogen storage as a green fuel alternative for motor vehicles. It is also investigating the so-called ‘drug delivery’ systems, i.e. the administration of long-release drugs, such as vitamin C with a 24-hour release. The surface of porous materials can be modified so that the drug is released upon exposure to UV light, a certain temperature, pH or other stimulus in the treatment of anti-inflammatory diseases, cancer or covid-19.
More information about Miroslav Almáši can be found HERE.
Ľubomír Tomáška, Laureate of the category Outstanding Academic in Slovakia
Professor Ľubomír Tomáška runs, together with Professor Jozef Nosek, the laboratory of the Departments of Genetics and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Bratislava, Slovakia, where he and a team of researchers and students are engaged in identifying the mechanisms that ensure communication by individual parts of our cells. Their main goal is to find out how the DNA molecules in chromosomes, specifically their terminal stretches (called telomeres), are protected from damage that would be fatal to the cell. They also study how mitochondria, the energy centers of cells, communicate with other parts of the cell.
A good teacher, according to Professor Tomáška, should be a competent professional and didactic, should be a personality with moral integrity, should possess an infectious optimism and joy for learning, empathy and warmth in their relationship with both students and colleagues. In his view, the quality of education is primarily based on the quality of teachers. Among the rewards of his teaching work, Professor Tomáška counts the pleasure of good and provocative questions from students in lectures and seminars, when they initiate an interesting polemic or when they have interesting non-conformist ideas on how to solve an experimental problem. A teacher’s ultimate success is the success of their students with whom they have had the opportunity to work.

Celebrating 30 years of continuous progress and innovation
“Nothing is as constant as change,” as the saying goes. It is therefore all the more remarkable when companies today operate successfully on the market for many decades. And this happens even more rarely in the IT industry, which feels like it is in a permanent a state of transformation. Many famous brands and products from the early days of the Internet have since disappeared. Not ESET. The company from Bratislava, Slovakia, has skillfully and innovatively maneuvered through the storms of the digital sea. In the process, the security manufacturer grew continuously from year to year. We take a look back at the milestones in ESET’s history.
35 years ago: The first antivirus software
Did you know that the founding of ESET is closely linked to the name Vienna? However, despite the city’s proximity to ESET headquarters in Bratislava, the connection between the two is more digital in nature.
At the beginning of ESET’s corporate history in 1987, the Iron Curtain separated Austria from what is now Slovakia, where the antivirus manufacturer was founded and still has its headquarters. At that time, young programmers Peter Paško and Miroslav Trnka discovered one of the first computer viruses, a member of the Vienna family – at the Bohunice nuclear power plant. The two programmers then wrote a program to detect it. This laid the foundation for the NOD antivirus product line. Incidentally, the acronym NOD stands for “Nemocnica na Okraji Disku”, translated as “The Hospital on the Edge of the Disk”, which is an allusion to the then popular Czechoslovakian hospital series “The Hospital on the Edge of Town”. Speaking of allusions: The company name is no accident either, but refers to the Egyptian spelling of the goddess Isis.
But before ESET became ESET, a few more years passed and brought political changes. Although NOD was a very advanced program for the time, when computer viruses were largely harmless gimmicks and could only spread to a limited extent via physical media such as floppy disks without the Internet, distribution was limited at the beginning. The company headquarters was a private garage, where the floppy disks were formatted and packaged. Social and economic changes took hold in 1990, when NOD was sold in Austria for the first time. However, under the name Stopvir.
30 years ago: Founding of the ESET company
In 1992, ESET was founded in Bratislava, then still part of the former Czechoslovakia. And in 1995, the first retail version of NOD32, called NOD iCE, was launched.
With Slovakia joining the European Union in 2004, ESET also became the European company as it has always felt itself to be. The clear commitment to European values and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as the written guarantee to refrain from backdoors of any kind, gives today’s customers peace of mind more than ever.
Present
Today, ESET is better and bigger than ever before. Well over 2,000 employees now work for ESET worldwide: at the headquarters in Bratislava, in the 30 regional offices and branches, and at its 13 globally distributed research and development centers. In 2021, the company once again achieved record sales and is heading for new highs in 2022. The portfolio now includes around 60 different products and caters to the needs of private customers, businesses of all sizes and government and non-governmental organizations. The company has long since evolved from a pure antivirus manufacturer into a broad-based IT security solutions provider, and is now considered the largest and most successful provider in the European Union.
With the construction of the ESET Campus in Bratislava, the company founders continue forward with their vision. Built sustainably, working with the future in mind: the new headquarters will serve as a center for technology and innovation. The site covers a total of 55,000 m², with the designed work supplied by the world-renowned architectural firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group.
Follow our Progress, stay Protected.

Enhancing ESET’s MSP program with detection and response

ESET’s managed service provider (MSP) program now offers ESET Inspect. For those unfamiliar with this technology, ESET Inspect enhances an organization’s security defenses with robust detection and response capabilities.
Reaching this milestone of enabling extended detection and response (XDR) via ESET Inspect is part of a multiyear effort at ESET to continuously improve and invest in its MSP program. The reason behind this pursuit is straightforward: if most small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) – indeed 71% of them in 2022 according to our data – prefer to outsource their cybersecurity to MSPs, then we need to provide these security service providers with the best tools, including detection and response, and a strong program that will help them protect their clients.
Current market figures support this approach. Canalys, for instance, recorded a 13.4% growth in revenue worldwide for managed IT services in 2021. This growth is expected to continue into the near future, with Channelnomics estimating a compound annual growth rate of 11.5% in the managed services market from 2021 to 2025 – no small rise indeed.
As the threat landscape becomes an increasingly harrowing place for MSPs and their clients, building a strong security capability is critical. By partnering with ESET, MSPs can offer their clients a comprehensive package of security technologies spanning prevention, detection, and response.
Mitigating third-party risks
Perhaps the greatest threat to the reputation of MSPs is a malicious actor that manages to compromise an MSP’s network in order to pivot to customers’ networks. This is a concern held by the majority of SMBs who see a lack of investment in cybersecurity as potentially leading to compromise elsewhere in the supply chain.
But MSPs can mitigate this threat and assuage clients’ concerns by deploying ESET Inspect to gain visibility into what is happening in their network and be alerted to suspicious activities. From the viewpoint of customers, this has the further benefit of building trust in your MSP offering, demonstrating that you practice what you preach.
SMBs turning to detection and response
According to our data, thirty-two percent of SMBs are currently using a detection and response solution and another 44% are considering doing so within the next two years. What might be driving this interest? While the potential entry points for threats to breach an organization’s defenses are various, web-based attacks may be among the foremost concerns for SMBs.
This is corroborated by ESET telemetry, which recorded 18 million unique scam sites and almost 4.7 million unique phishing URLs from May to August 2022. Compared to the first four months of 2022, the number of unique phishing URL detections increased by 28%.
In the face of threats like these, however, we believe that many SMBs have slight to no confidence in their resilience against cyberattacks. Since ESET Inspect can speed up the time to identify, determine the root cause of, and respond to threats, the SMBs investing or looking for a traditionally enterprise-oriented solution like XDR begins to make sense.

ESET’s revamped MSP program
ESET’s MSP program is built on a platform called ESET PROTECT. The security approach we took when designing this platform was to balance prevention with detection and response. Now, the full ESET PROTECT platform, including the XDR-enabling module ESET Inspect, has been opened to MSPs.
To make sure that ESET PROTECT addresses the needs of businesses of all sizes, we made it modular and adaptable. This allows businesses to access well-configured slices of ESET’s prevention, detection, and response technologies to bolster their defenses. Businesses can also choose between cloud and on-premises deployments.
Based on our continued investment into the ESET PROTECT platform, I believe ESET is a leader in supporting MSPs with their challenging task of making SMBs more secure, and thus freeing them up to focus on their core business. This belief is further supported by the high level of satisfaction among MSPs partnering with ESET – in a recent survey we discovered that almost 98% of surveyed MSPs had not seen any major issues and have been happy in general with the quality of the partnership.
Whatever level MSPs are at in their security practice, ESET has their needs covered. However the threats of today evolve, ESET continues to innovate its security technologies to counter them. We are here to enable MSPs to deliver more by continuously bringing them added value – this is a commitment that will remain steadfast in the long term.

Why the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) Needs Better Security

How to Leverage the Principle of Least Privilege for Stronger Network Security
The principle of least privilege (PoLP) is an information security concept that gives applications or users minimum required network permissions to perform their jobs. Therefore, PoLP is an important aspect of privilege access management (PAM).
Implementing the principle of least privilege provides network security by avoiding needless exposure. For example, a user and employee access limit reduces the risks of cybercriminals getting hold of critical files.
Having easy access to the most critical assets of an organization is vitally important. The only users with full access should be the current administrator or the executives in the company. For newly hired personnel within the organization, the lowest permission levels should be implemented at the onset. Full permissions should be granted after screening and a background check. Bear in mind that background checks are always cheaper than data breaches.
Why is PoLP Important?
Putting the least privilege in place goes beyond having a single or limited number of admins for internal operations. Subsequently, many organizations give users over-privileged access to information that has nothing to do with them. The bitter truth is that half of the users share their credentials with someone else.
Cyber threats occur inside or outside, and both attackers operate alike. Criminals from outside leverage user account to gain control over endpoints and to acquire targeted access to valuable data. Insiders leverage the access they have or any compromised accounts. With that, they can leverage data and applications for malicious activities.
The principle of least privilege ensures that access to critical assets and high-value data gets protected. It applies to not only just users, but also to applications, connected devices, and systems that require access as well.
The principle of least privilege allows the minimum amount of access necessary for employees to complete their job without restriction. It gives a form of balance, keeps systems safe, and facilitates productivity.
There primary goals of least privilege include:
- To bring a balance between usability and security protections.
- To implement a minimum access policy for managing and securing privileged credentials.
- Flexible controls are needed to balance compliance requirements with cybersecurity, end-user experience, and operational functions.
- Users only need access to the minimum amount of required privileges.
- There’s a need to give users a frictionless experience while keeping the system highly secure.
Key Benefits of Least Privilege
Reducing the Potential for Insider Threats
Cyber actors on the inside use access to get all accessible data for exfiltration or destruction. In order to successfully prevent an insider threat, use a comprehensive security policy that contains procedures to prevent and detect misuse. There should also be guidelines for conducting misuse investigations and potential consequences and restricting employee access to critical infrastructure. There should have a place for locking up sensitive information and isolating high-value systems requiring tight verification access. If necessary, biometric authentication can be used to prevent employees from using another staff key card.
Reducing the Attack Surface
An attack surface refers to all possible points where unauthorized users could gain access to a system and extract data. Organizations with already over-privileged users need to implement the least privilege principle to eliminate unnecessary access. A smaller attack surface is easier to protect. One way to go about it is by determining user roles and privilege levels, to help understand the particular behaviors of users and employees.
Limiting Malware Propagation or Infection
The principle of least privilege prevents malware from spreading on a network. Malware often requires local administrator rights to gain access. Meanwhile, an administrator with access to various network resources has the potential to spread malware to others.
Having fewer users with elevated rights helps in reducing malware infections. In the event of any attack, it becomes easier to contain, thereby preventing the spread to the entire system. In addition, PoLP reduces users’ ability to install or download unauthorized applications, which can often include malware.
Increased System Stability
Organizations often have to deal with human errors from within the work environment. For instance, an employee could mistakenly tamper with a file and cause major organizational issues . The principle of least privilege is a great way to prevent high-impact human error and thus guarantee greater network and system stability.
Applications running with restricted privileges are less likely to crash the entire system. PoLP also helps limit the downtime associated with a crash or data breach. As a result, an organization practicing PoLP enjoys more stability, enhanced fault tolerance, and improved work productivity.
Challenges with PoLP
Implementing the PoLP comes with numerous benefits, though certain roadblocks can impede its full success. These might include:
Diverse and Complicated Networks
The least privilege comes with the need to centralize accounts to accommodate users and machines. Modern computing environments use numerous complex platforms – both cloud and on-premise. The implication is multiple endpoints for applications and heterogeneous operating systems. As a result, it becomes quite challenging to guarantee the five most important concerns for the security of an organization’s network.
These five concerns include the constant protection of networking equipment, security from computer operating system attacks on , preservation of computer hardware , and maintaining data integrity and confidentiality..
Cloud Computing and Environments
Companies that use cloud environments experience challenges regarding a lack of segmentation, excess privileges, and account sharing due to cloud-native computing. The misconfigurations that stem from cloud permissions often leave an organization vulnerable to potential cybersecurity attacks. Therefore, implementing the principle of least privilege requires strategies beyond a single tool or product.
Default Settings Challenges
Operating systems focus more on ease of use than security. Moreover, the software conditions come with default credentials that are easy to find online. These operating systems shy away from enforcing a minimum access policy as default. The implication is that users have the power to carry out actions like creating backups and deleting files. which can negate the principle of least privilege and expose a network to potential attacks.
How to Implement PoLP
The Implementation of PoLP need not be a complex task. A simple restriction preventing end-users from exfiltrating certain information is a good start. Organizations that want to successfully implement the principle of least privilege can start with the following:
- Conducting privilege audits by reviewing all existing accounts, programs, and processes to ensure there is no loophole.
- Starting or converting all accounts to least privilege to put the necessary checks and balances in place.
- Organizations can also add privileges based on the access required to perform specific tasks.
- Separating privileges requires distinguishing between lower-level privilege accounts and higher-level-privilege accounts.
- Track and trace user or individual employee actions through one-time-use credentials. It goes a long way to avoid potential damage.
Examples of the Principle of Least Privilege
The principle of least privilege has opportunities for every level of a system. It covers applications, databases, end users, networks, systems, processes, and all other facets of an IT environment. Here are some examples of accounts that need PoLP:
- User Accounts: The principle of least privilege only gives users or employees the necessary rights for carrying out their tasks or responsibilities. If the user’s computer gets compromised, it limits the lateral spread of that threat. A major challenge arises when an employee has root access privileges, which can cause
- MySQL Accounts: When several accounts perform unique tasks, a MySQL setup needs to follow the PoLP. When the online setup allows users to sort data, the MySQL account with sorting privileges becomes an issue of compulsion. That way, a hacker who gains access to exploits only gains the power to sort records. However, there comes a big problem if the account has the power to delete records, as the hacker then has the ability to wipe out the entire database.
- Just in Time Accounts: Users who rarely need root privileges should only receive reduced privileges the rest of the time. Organizations must make it a policy only to retrieve passwords from a vault when needed. Using disposable credentials equally goes a long way to guarantee cyber security. It serves as a great way to increase the traceability of a network.
Final Thoughts
Network security best practices call for implementing the principle of least privilege. It serves as an efficient method for ensuring mission-critical data does not fall into the wrong hands. With such high stakes, it is crucial to learn how to properly implement PoLP across your organization’s network.

Launching the first-ever NordVPN 360° marketing campaign in Germany

In this interview, we speak to Joanna Rusin-Rohrig, Germany country manager, and Ieva Račienė, brand manager – the two NordVPN insiders who made this campaign happen. Read their interviews and find out the full behind-the-scenes story of this 360° NordVPN branding campaign in Germany: from idea creation, planning, and development to the final results and lessons learned.

From campaign idea to execution
Could you briefly introduce the campaign you just launched?
Ieva: Yes, we call it the “Safely be you” campaign. It was a huge milestone for our organization because it was the first 360° branding campaign ever done at NordVPN when all channels were aligned and focused on one message:
Switch on privacy. Switch off trackers and viruses. Go Nord. Safely be you.
(Privatsphäre ein, Trackern und Viren aus. NordVPN. Ganz sicher du selbst.)
With this key message, we wanted to stress the importance of privacy and make a connection with the usage of our product. Unlike the general approach that focuses on risks and dangers by showing hoodie-wearing hackers in dark rooms trying to steal personal data, we concentrated on more modern and positive messaging emphasizing the emotional benefit of safety. NordVPN protects you and your daily actions online: private messages, social interactions, and transactions. Nothing can be more important than that.
This “Safely be you” campaign aimed to show that everyone’s digital life has the same or even more threats than their “real” lives.
Is it any different from the usual NordVPN campaigns? If yes, how?
Joanna: In fact, it was very different from the usual marketing activities, which are strictly driven by performance indicators. This was the first time NordVPN launched an awareness campaign and the first time we implemented one in Germany.
What did the development of the whole branding campaign look like? Could you give us a sense of the development and implementation stages?
Ieva: It took us eight months to get from idea approval to campaign launch. To tailor the campaign to the German market, we first started looking for external partners.
From day one, our media team, in cooperation with our long-term partner, The Specialist Works, started analyzing media opportunities and best practices in the country and working on an appropriate media plan to promote our creative approach. Meanwhile, our other partner – the team at Influence.vision – helped us find the best influencers. For designing our video ad, we chose a local creative agency, Jung Von Matt. Together, we developed a creative concept called “Safely be you.”
To sum up, not everything was done by our external partners – a large part of the visual design and creative copywriting was done in-house.
Joanna: To give you a feeling of how big the project was: we developed nine separate media plans, from out-of-home advertising to mobile influencer activation. It was a huge team effort to create and execute them on time. More than 100 people worked together internally and in external teams on the execution of the whole campaign.
And speaking of branding campaign promotion tools, what kind of marketing channels were used to launch this campaign? How did you select them?
Ieva: As it was a 360° campaign, it covered all possible marketing channels: TVC, radio, OOH, PR coverage, dedicated celebrity campaign, influencer integrations, social media, PPC, various mobile app ads with full digital scope, and more. We also leveraged high-reach and visibility placements, and our SEO team covered various content clusters.
Joanna: Our main KPI for the campaign is the improvement of the upper funnel metrics – awareness and consideration levels in the market. Therefore, we chose channels and platforms that index highly on reach and reliability in our target group for us to achieve maximum penetration in the market with the given budget.
How are you measuring the success of each marketing channel that was used?
Joanna: Apart from the overall awareness level increase, we defined separate KPIs, like a specific CPA for TV or a level of positive sentiment for influencer integrations. These are our pillars of measurement that allow us to establish whether or not we can regard a certain action as a success or failure.

Cybersecurity awareness in Germany
Your main goal is to raise awareness about personal cybersecurity among the German population. How aware are they of the threats they face online, and are they ready to embrace new technology for their cyber protection?
Joanna: According to our research data, Germans spend almost 25 years of their lives online. However, only 21% of them can say they are well aware of the different ways to secure their devices. Even though secure Wi-Fi is relevant to 69% of Germans, only 23% use a VPN to keep their connection safe at all times. This means that although people would like to browse the internet securely and privately, the burden of achieving this goal seems too big. With the campaign, we want to inform our relevant audiences how easy it is to be safe online.

Source: nordvpn.com
With the company in full swing now, how would you rate the first results in trying to achieve your main goal and increase NordVPN product usage in Germany?
Joanna: We definitely see a big interest in the topic, and search queries both for the VPN category and NordVPN are increasing significantly. With it, we see increased traffic numbers for our German website and prolonged time spent on the pages. We are waiting for comprehensive post-campaign research results to analyze more in-depth what influence the campaign had on all customer journey stages.
For you as a country manager, what was the most challenging part of running this campaign, and why?
Joanna: My role in this big project was to consult all teams to help them to achieve the best-localized approach. Another important part was to create a link between our headquarters and agencies operating for us in Germany.
Most people working on this campaign do not speak German, so my local team supported them on all language, copy, and influencer content-related tasks. With literally thousands of various marketing campaign design pieces and copy, keeping tabs on everything was challenging, but we managed to spot all mistakes on time.
Tips for a successful branding campaign
What is the most important thing to consider when launching such branding campaigns? Do you have any advice?
Ieva:
Form a team you can trust. This is the most crucial part of all projects. Whether it is your colleagues or external partners, I strongly suggest gathering a team you can trust 100%. And if the team consists of professional and dedicated people ready to go the extra mile, they’re destined to succeed.
Know your users or the people you are talking to. Understanding their needs and how we can help to solve their problems is the key success factor to being relevant.
Have the courage to do things that were never done before. In our case, having the first branding campaign focused on an emotional message might have been seen as a challenge at first, but we took the risk because the challenge might pay off massively.
Joanna:
Have your KPIs and measurement methods established before you start planning, and make sure that all the team members are on the same page.
Think of having regular check-ins with all the team members involved so no information gets lost on the way.
When you are done with all the project planning, go ahead and add an extra month to it. 🙂 Life happens, and this buffer will allow you to find solutions for challenges that arise on the go.
