Sigma Specification 2.0: What You Need to Know

Sigma rules have become the security team equivalent of LEGO bricks and systems. With LEGO, people can build whatever they can imagine by connecting different types of bricks. With Sigma Specification 2.0 rules, security teams can create vendor-agnostic detections without being limited by proprietary log formats.

In response to the Sigma rules’ popularity, the team that built them updated them in August 2024, giving security teams new capabilities. With Sigma rules 2.0, security teams now have:

  • New fields and modifiers that improve how security teams use the rules
  • Correlation specifications to extend rules to more sophisticated detections
  • Filters that reduce false positives
  • JSON schema to allow automation

The Sigma rule v. 2.0 updates enable you to expand your usage of the rules and improve your threat detection and response capabilities.

Why were the Sigma rules updated?

According to the team responsible for the Sigma rules, security teams embraced the rules and clamored for additional capabilities. In response, the team started by creating pySigma, introducing enhancements that led to evolving the specification itself and the release of v 2.0.

What are the key changes in Sigma v.2.0?

To improve security teams’ use of the rules, the team made three critical updates.

New Metadata Fields and Modifiers

The original Sigma rules offered 11 fields. In v2.0, the team added the following new fields:

  • Taxonomy: optional attribute that can define field names, field values, logsource names so that organizations can create a custom taxonomy or transform the taxonomy to the default model
  • Scope: ability to define whether a rule should trigger on a specific set of machine types with a specific software installed

Further, the update incorporates new Detection categories that include:

  • Field Existence: in case a field is optional in an event
  • Placeholders: values that get their final meaning at conversion or rule usage time, like replacing placeholders with a single, multiple or-linked value or pattern, replacing placeholders with a query expression, or conducting lookups in tables or API while matching the Sigma rule that contains the placeholder
  • Standard Placeholders: defined values for administrative user accounts, server systems used as jump servers, workstation systems, server systems, and domain controller systems
  • Keywords search: a list under search-identifiers that looks for keywords across an entire event

Finally, Sigma v2.0 now includes a modifiers appendix that includes the following modifier types:

  • Generic: list of modifiers that can apply to all field types, like all, startswith, endswith, contains, exists, cased, cidr and base64
  • String: regular expression (Regex) and Encoding modifiers that only apply to string
  • Numeric: list of modifiers that only apply to numeric values, like lt, lte, gt, gte
  • Time: modifiers to extract a numeric value from a date, like minute, hour, day, week, month, and year
  • IP (Internet Protocol): modifiers that can only apply to IP valudes, like cidr
  • Specific: modifiers to expand value placeholders or to modify a plain string into a field reference

Rule Correlation

The new rule correlation specification may be the most exciting update for v2.0. Although the security teams could aggregate rules, the expression was limited. The new rule correlation specification enables security teams to link several events together to create more complex detections.

For example, security teams can build Sigma rules that identify:

  • Invalid logins meet or exceed a set threshold
  • Invalid login alerts on a host that come from an unknown location
  • Alerts generated in the same timespan

Sigma v2.0 defines the following correlation types:

  • Event count (event_count): condition that counts events happening over a time frame based on a defined threshold, like more than 50 failed login attempts in 3 minutes
  • Value count (value_count): counts the values in a specified field based on a threshold, like failed login attempts with more than 50 different user accounts against a specific source and from a specific destination in a day
  • Temporal proximity (temporal): group of rules that all occur during the same timespan, grouped by the same value, like three Sigma rules impacted within 5 minutes by the same user
  • Ordered Temporal Proximity (temporal_ordered): group of rules that occur in a specified order within the same timespan, like 5 failed logins followed by a successful login from the same user account within 10 minutes.

Sigma Filters

Instead of writing the same exclusions across different individual rules, the Sigma Filter enables security teams to write one exclusion in one location and apply it across the entire environment.

Sigma’s creators noted two reasons for implementing these new exclusions that apply the “not” condition:

  • Applying the condition to the initial detection can be less effective because they fail to consider the organization’s unique environment.
  • Attackers may attempt to use these file paths, patterns, and behaviors to evade detection.

Sigma Filters are separate from an organization’s individual Sigma rules, enabling the detections to remain as globally applicable as possible. By applying Sigma Filters to multiple Sigma rules, security teams can manage their detections more effectively.

Data migration services explained: Choosing the right solution for your business

CloudM’s data migration tool is designed to be user-friendly and to give customers the best experience if they decide to tackle migrations on their own. However, there are many circumstances in which your migration needs a higher level of expert support, and that’s where our white-glove data migration services come in. Craig Fegan, CloudM’s Professional Services Manager, answers some common questions about serviced migrations.

What types of organizations usually opt for CloudM’s migration services?

Serviced migrations are ideal for any scale of business. At one end, there are small businesses that don’t have IT teams, confidence or technical expertise. These businesses are mindful of their budget, but while managing their own migration may save money, it risks complications which could prove costly in the long run.

At the other end of the scale are larger companies which may well have in-house teams. However, if they’re migrating a lot of data and a lot of users, that opens up more risk because there are so many moving parts and technical nuances that could impact end user experience, from their chosen cloud platform to an unavoidable API, which could impact end user experience. They understand they need our expert help with this.

With CloudM Backup, you can backup the following Calendar data:

  • Events and meetings: We back up and restore meeting which include meeting links, including Zoom links. We do not back up events without meeting links.

Yes, you can back up recurring meetings with CloudM Backup.

We do not back up Tasks at the moment.

In Google Calendar, attachments are a link to a Drive item. We will back up the item if the user’s Drive is also being backed up and restore the meeting with the link included. The Drive file itself can be backed up separately if required.

These will be backed up as event attendees. Handling of edge cases, such as when a user tries to restore an event and the resource has since become occupied, will be handled by your Workspace administrator.

The default frequency for backing up Calendar is 8 hours.

Data behemoths: How large users and unique structures impact data migrations

The biggest obstacles to a swift data migration hide in plain sight. Large users and unique data structures can cause trouble for the migration process if you haven’t factored them into your strategy.

Here, we explore why large users and unique data structures influence migrations, and what you can do to mitigate the risks and keep business running smoothly.

Why do large users impact the data migration process?

Large users have high item count, big file size, or a combination of the two. How these item counts and file sizes interact with destination API restrictions and quota limits is what makes them hard to migrate.

During a migration, data is moved from the source to the destination platform. It’s encrypted in transit and at rest to ensure the data is secure throughout the process. The larger the file, the longer it takes to migrate. And API restrictions limit the size of the file you can download.

Quota limits applied by cloud providers can slow down your migration

Cloud providers also limit how many items can be migrated. This could mean two users with the same amount of data could migrate at different speeds – if one has a higher file count than the other. User A – with 10GB spread across 50 items – migrates faster than user B – who has 10GB and 100 items.

Both Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure have quota limits for how much data can be migrated at a time, and restrictions on how many API calls you can make.  A user with many small files can take longer to migrate than a user with fewer, larger files.

It may be necessary to upgrade your tech

Your resource limitations, such as the number and specification of servers, also influence data migration project timelines. Those working to a hard deadline might choose to invest in more or better servers – but this isn’t always an option.

What are unique data structures and how do they impact migration timelines?

When it comes to unique data structures, you’re looking for file types (MIME types) such as folders, movies, and high-resolution images. Large files that hold up migrations.

A large user with a unique data structure could consist of a high number of images and movie files in high resolution. This combines big data size and item count, making for a very different migration compared to a company with lots of smaller data files like text documents and emails.

Some companies have a low number of huge files, which also creates complexity. This causes bottlenecks when you have the resources to migrate items quickly, but your target environment has an upload limit. You could max out Google’s 750GB a day upload limit with a few files, in a few hours.

How to deal with large users

You can’t avoid large users – sooner or later you need to get them across to your target system. But what can you do to control their impact on the data migration process?

  1. Quantify them. How many large users do you have, and how much data do they have? Migration tools can give you an accurate view of item count.
  2. Encourage large users to tidy up their files ahead of migration. Delete obsolete data to avoid hampering the migration process with old files.
  3. Plan your migration with large users in mind. Can you structure your data migration process so that recent files are migrated first? This way, you can get into the target destination quickly and migrate legacy data later.
  4. Opt not to migrate permissions on files. Migrate files minus the permissions if your priority is getting data into the target destination, fast.

Use CloudM’s environment and readiness scans to identify potential roadblocks

Modern migration tools can also help you deal with large users. Take CloudM environment scan, which gives you an item count, shared folder count, and other data points you can use to scope out the migration and estimate a timeline.

Secondly, the CloudM readiness scan checks over source and destination compatibility and connection, flagging limitations and revealing environmental complexities. You can use this scan as a last-minute safety check when you’re ready to migrate. For hard deadlines – such as mergers and acquisitions – using a migration service ensures a frictionless, managed process.

CloudM can help you tame the biggest data behemoth

The right tools can help you avoid disruption and maintain business continuity throughout the data migration process. For those keen to tackle the migration themselves, CloudM’s consulting services give you tailored training and advice.

For a fully managed project, our white-glove migration services ensure the process is handled with care and expertise. We’ve worked with large users, complex data structures, and huge data volumes. We can get you from source to target destination swiftly.

Gone but not forgotten: What to consider when managing leavers data

Data is one of an organization’s most valuable assets. But if not managed correctly, it can also become a costly liability. With ever-evolving data protection laws and compliance requirements, businesses must find the right balance between retaining and deleting data. This is particularly crucial when managing data left behind by departing employees.

What is data archiving?

Data archiving is the process of storing data for long-term preservation so that it can be accessed when needed. Typically, data, such as emails and files, is archived when an employee leaves the company.  The need to access archived data can arise due to reasons such as:

  • Compliance requirements
  • Legal requests
  • Historical reference

Organizations therefore need to keep their data for a certain period. But while archiving data ensures long-term accessibility, it also introduces challenges, particularly when it comes to compliance and security. Organizations must carefully manage the fine line between retaining essential records and deleting outdated data.

Why is data archiving a balancing act?

Striking the right balance between data retention and deletion is a challenge for IT and compliance teams. While businesses need to keep data for audits and legal requirements, retaining it indefinitely leads to security risks and unnecessary costs. To complicate matters, collaboration platforms like Google and Microsoft don’t always align with business needs: Google, for example, permanently deletes most data after 30 days, which may not be enough for compliance purposes.

Keeping data forever is not the answer

Not retaining data for long enough creates problems. The same is true for the opposite end of the spectrum – keeping data indefinitely. “Forgotten data” not only accumulates storage costs, it also increases an organization’s security and compliance risk. For example, an organization found to be in breach of HIPAA faces penalties of up to $68,000 per violation per year as well as civil lawsuits and criminal charges. Therefore it is important that data can be purged upon request and after a defined period of time.

Beyond regulatory fines, excessive data storage also increases exposure to cyber threats. In 2023 alone, data breaches cost businesses an average of $4.45 million per incident. Holding onto unnecessary data creates more entry points for hackers and complicates compliance with laws like GDPR, which mandate data minimization.

Why should you archive your business data?

1. To comply with legal requirements

Ensuring that leavers’ data is stored securely and so that it can be searched and restored is not only best practice, it is also a regulatory requirement in many legislations.

Laws and directives such as GDPR, HIPAA, and NIS2 mandate that organizations retain certain types of data for predefined periods. Beyond retention, businesses must also ensure data is secure, accessible, and tamper-proof. Failing to meet these requirements can result in hefty fines, reputational damage and even legal action.

2. To preserve institutional knowledge

Employees come and go, but their digital footprint often holds valuable insights. It is important for the smooth running of your organization that emails and files are stored securely and can be accessed as needed, even after an employee has left the organisation.

3. To streamline legal and regulatory audits

Compliance doesn’t stop at retention. Organizations must also produce records quickly during audits or legal proceedings. Tools like CloudM Archive offer advanced search functionality which enables you to locate specific data sets without combing through mountains of information.

4. To ensure data security and integrity

With features like immutable storage and role-based access controls, archiving tools provide an added layer of security. This is critical for demonstrating that archived data has not been altered or tampered with—a requirement in many compliance scenarios.

5. To achieve cost efficiency

Storing inactive user data on primary platforms can be expensive. 3rd party tools can offer a cost-effective alternative, freeing up valuable resources whilst ensuring compliance needs are met.

How can CloudM Archive help secure your data and save costs?

With CloudM Archive, you can take control of your data: retaining it securely when needed and deleting it when it’s no longer required. Whether you need to reduce storage costs, ensure compliance, or quickly access archived records, CloudM Archive makes the process effortless and efficient.

CloudM Archive enables you to:

  1. Reduce costs: CloudM Archive can help companies reduce costs by automatically removing or reassigning user licenses.
  2. Automate retention policies: CloudM Archive can help companies automate retention policies based on selected organisational units (OUs) or create bespoke retention policies based on specific requirements.
  3. Remain in control of your data: CloudM Archive can help companies host leavers’ archived data in their own storage, avoiding vendor lock-in.

Simplify compliance with CloudM Archive

Achieving compliance doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With CloudM Archive, organisations can strike the perfect balance between data retention, accessibility and cost-efficiency. Whether you’re preparing for an audit, navigating complex regulations or simply safeguarding your institutional knowledge, CloudM Archive ensures your data is “gone but not forgotten” while enabling you to delete it as and when required.
