Nobel laureate Kip Thorne chairs the ESET Science Award International jury in 2020

BRATISLAVA – The laureates of this year’s ESET Science Award will be decided by the International jury chaired by a Nobel laureate, Kip Thorne. An American physicist known for his work in gravitational physics and astrophysics, Thorne is one of the three scientists who were awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics. He entered the world of science fiction as an executive producer and scientific advisor on the movie Interstellar. Together with other members of the jury, he will select the laureates in two categories of the ESET Science Award: Outstanding Individual Contributor to Slovak Science and Exceptional Young Scientist in Slovakia under the Age of 35.

The International jury of renowned scientists is one of the pillars of the ESET Science Award. When evaluating finalists and selecting laureates, they assess various parameters of scientific work, such as current scientific research results and publications, measurable scientometric data, involvement in international scientific projects, communication and popularization, cooperation with other scientific disciplines, the principles of scientific ethics, the potential impact of scientific work on other areas of life, and as reference point for close collaborators or students.

The chair of the International jury in 2019 was the German biophysicist Erwin Neher, laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1991 for his development of the patch-clamp technique for detection of ion activity in the cell membrane. Kip Thorne will fill the role of chair on the International jury in 2020. He is known for his work in gravitational physics and astrophysics, with an emphasis on relativistic stars, black holes and gravitational waves. He and two other scientists were awarded the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for the first direct detection and observation of gravitational waves. Since his retirement, Thorne has taken new directions in his career, including film, where he was not only a consultant on the blockbuster movie Interstellar but also a co-author of its original concept.

The International jury consists of the following renowned scientists:

Hana Dvořaková is a Czech chemist and philanthropist who has dedicated her scientific career to the development of substances that can be used against the HIV virus. In 2013, she and her husband Dalimil founded the Experientia Foundation, which focuses on supporting young scientists in the field of organic, bioorganic and medicinal chemistry with the aim of making Czech chemistry among the world’s best.

Rolf-Dieter Heuer is an experimental particle physicist. Most of his scientific work is related to the study of electron-positron reactions, the development of experimental techniques, and the construction and operation of large detection systems. Professor Heuer was the Director-General of CERN from 2009 to 2015. More recently, he has served as the chair of the European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors.

Ralf Riedel focuses on two main areas – molecular synthesis of advanced ceramics at ultra-high temperatures and their energy-related applications, and ultra-high-pressure synthesis of new materials.

Fiona Watt is a British scientist, internationally known for her work in stem cell research. She has explored the role of stem cells in maintaining the skin, which is constantly repaired and replaced throughout our lifetime. She has discovered factors that control how stem cells differentiate, shedding light on how this process might be disrupted in mouth and skin cancer.

Tibor Krisztin is a Hungarian mathematician working on dynamical systems and differential equations. Since 2000, he has been a professor at the Bolyai Institute of the University of Szeged, where he was also the director from 2011 to 2014.

The third category of the ESET Science Award, Outstanding Academic, is decided by a committee composed of representatives of Slovak universities. The award laureates will be announced via an online event on the ESET Science Award Facebook profile on Wednesday, October 14, at 1:30 pm (CEST).

Network Authentication & Portnox CLEAR

Traditionally, enterprises have enabled network authentication via usernames and passwords. As we now know today, this method of network authentication can be easily compromised by bad actors, making it no longer sufficiently secure for enforcing network access control. As a means of elevating and strengthening network authentication, Portnox has introduced several new and powerful certificate authority services within Portnox CLEAR, our cloud-delivered network access control solution.

Types of Network Authentication with Portnox CLEAR

Self-Onboarding (Agent-Based)

When an endpoint enrolls using AgentP, Portnox CLEAR will automatically generate a supplicant certificate for the endpoint. This is true for all supported operating systems (Windows, OSX, Linux, etc.), and for all AgentP enrollment methods.

Self-Onboarding (Agentless)

For those not using AgentP, Portnox CLEAR generates an organizational root certificate upon org creation in the system and adds the root certificate to its list of trusted root certificates.

Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP)

To make certificate issuance easier for our customers, Portnox CLEAR also supports SCEP, the open-source protocol, which issues a one-time password to the user transmitted out-of-band.

Microsoft InTune

Portnox CLEAR customers utilizing our MS InTune integration can use InTune to authenticate devices to the network as an alternative to Portnox’s agent-based or agentless options.

EAP-TLS 802.1X

EAP-TLS is considered by many to be the gold standard when it comes to network authentication. EAP-TLS 802.1X authentication is available with Portnox CLEAR out of the box.

Simple, Secure Certificate Authority Services

With Portnox’s ability to offer companies an easy and secure certificate authority services, each customer can leverage its own certificate authority in the cloud, allowing for simpler, more seamless and secure user onboarding. Once configured, Portnox CLEAR will issue every user an identity certificate for self-enrollment via the portal. Once the user has a certificate, he/she will then be granted password-less authentication.

ESET Research uncovers APT-C-23 group’s new Android spyware masked as Threema and Telegram

BRATISLAVA – ESET researchers have analyzed a new version of Android spyware used by APT-C-23, a threat group active since at least 2017 that is known for mainly targeting the Middle East. The new spyware, detected by ESET security products as Android/SpyC23.A, builds upon previously reported versions with extended espionage functionality, new stealth features and updated C&C communication. One of the ways the spyware is distributed is via a fake Android app store, impersonating well-known messaging apps, such as Threema and Telegram, as a lure.

ESET researchers started investigating the malware when a fellow researcher tweeted about an unknown, little-detected Android malware sample in April 2020. “A collaborative analysis showed that this malware was part of the APT-C-23 arsenal – a new, enhanced version of their mobile spyware,” explains Lukáš Štefanko, the ESET researcher who analyzed Android/SpyC23.A.

The spyware was found lurking behind seemingly legitimate apps in a fake Android app store. “When we analyzed the fake store, it contained both malicious and clean items. The malware was hiding in apps posing as AndroidUpdate, Threema and Telegram. In some cases, victims would end up with both the malware and the impersonated app installed,” comments Štefanko.

After installation, the malware requests a series of sensitive permissions, disguised as security and privacy features. “The attackers used social engineering-like techniques to trick victims into granting the malware various sensitive rights. For example, permission to read notifications is masked as a message encrypting feature,” details Štefanko.

Once initialized, the malware can carry out a range of espionage activities based on commands from its C&C server. Besides recording audio; exfiltrating call logs, SMS and contacts; and stealing files, the updated Android/SpyC23.A can also read notifications from messaging apps, make screen and call recordings, and dismiss notifications from some built-in Android security apps. The malware’s C&C communication has also undergone an update, making the C&C server more difficult to identify for security researchers.

The APT-C-23 group is known to have used both Windows and Android components in its operations, with the Android components first described in 2017 by Qihoo 360 Technology under the name Two-tailed Scorpion. Since then, multiple analyses of APT-C-23’s mobile malware have been published. Android/SpyC23.A – the group’s latest spyware version – features several improvements making it even more dangerous to victims.

“To stay safe from spyware, we advise Android users to only install apps from the official Google Play Store, double-check the permissions requested, and use a trustworthy and up-to-date mobile security solution,” concludes Štefanko.

What you need to do for an effective privileged access management

Managing privileged access to a corporation has become an obligation almost everywhere in the world. Laws such as the LGPD (General Data Protection Law) and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) oblige companies to maintain the integrity and security of the data providers’ personal information.

Also, companies operating in countries that do not have data protection laws yet are subject to great pressure from the market to adopt certifications that guarantee the integrity and security of personal data, such as ISO 27001, NIST’s Cyber Security Framework, and PCI DSS.

One way that companies have found to comply with these standards is by adopting an efficient privileged access management solution, but when implementing this type of solution, companies face a great difficulty in integrating the 3 phases of privileged access management to cover the complete cycle of these accesses.

To help you in this task, we have separated the 3 fundamental phases for you to see if your privileged access management solution performs accesses in a broad and efficient way. Check them out:

Before

In order to have a broad and efficient privileged access management, it is necessary to pay special attention to the initial phase of managing privileged credentials.

This phase is responsible for provisioning and guaranteeing access to certified machines and privileged credentials through digital certificates, passwords, SSH keys. Therefore, it is really important.

During

This is the part where privileged access management actually takes place, making it possible to track all user activities in the privileged session in real time, monitor, and analyze suspicious behaviors from users and machines, etc.

Having a solution that can define and limit the tasks that a privileged session will be allowed to perform is essential for your company’s information security to succeed.

After

After performing the two previous phases, it is important that your privileged access management solution records every action taken in the privileged session. Through this audit, your company ensures that, during the sessions, there are no security breaches, can record all actions performed by users and machines, and allow viewing the privileged session recording.

Points that require attention

There is a great difficulty for companies to implement this type of technology, since most suppliers do not offer an integrated support, in which the 3 phases of the management of privileged credentials are interconnected, and that makes the companies end up opting for hiring more than one solution, so that each one performs a different part of the task.

Unlike other solutions, senhasegura offers the market an integrated solution, through which it performs the 3 phases effectively in just one environment, facilitating the management of privileged credentials and keeping your company secure, free from fines and leaks of sensitive data.

The international jury of the ESET Science Award, led by Nobel Laureate Kip Thorne, selects this year’s winners

The ESET Science Award recognizes its new winners. They were selected by an international commission, headed by Nobel  prize winner Kip Thorne, on the basis of a demanding evaluation process. Fedor Šimkovic was named laureate in the category Outstanding Personality of Slovak Science, Tamás Csanádi was named winner in the Outstanding Young Scientist under 35 category, and Ivan Varga became the Outstanding University Teacher laureate.

The aim of the ESET Science Award is to highlight personalities within Slovak science whose contribution is significant not only for Slovakia, but also in the international scientific research arena. The winners of the scientific categories: Exceptional Personality of Slovak Science and Exceptional Young Scientist under 35 were selected by an international commission and based on demanding criteria, such as current scientific research results and publications, measurable scientometric data, involvement in international scientific projects, communication and popularization, cooperation with other scientific disciplines, the principles of scientific ethics, the potential impact of scientific work on other areas of life, and its use as a touchstone reference by close collaborators and students.

The International Commission was chaired by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Kip Thorne, one of three awarded scientists involved in the first direct detection and observation of gravitational waves. Professor Thorne is one of the world’s leading experts on the astrophysical implications of Einstein’s theory of relativity. He is actively involved in the popularization of science, including writing books and collaborating on the creation of Christopher Nolan’s popular film Interstellar, in which he was not only a consultant but also a co-author of the original film concept.

“Science and technology based on scientific research are key to solving problems such as pandemics or global warming – they can save the world,” Professor Thorne stated during his speech to the scientific community in Slovakia. “I consider it equally important to encourage respect among both politicians and the public in science, and in the views of scientists. We also need a new generation of world leaders who will lead the world to responsible and science-based solutions. The key benefit of the ESET Science Award is this inspiration, and its approach to highlighting the importance of science for society.”

Other esteemed members of the commission are Czech chemistry expert Hana Dvořáková, British biologist Fiona Watt, German physicist Rolf-Dieter Heuer, German chemist Ralf Riedel and Hungarian mathematician Tibor Krisztin. The laureate for the Outstanding University Teacher category was  chosen by representatives of Slovak scientific universities. The winners were announced to the public through an online statement on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

Fedor Šimkovic, laureate in the category Exceptional Personality of Slovak Science
Fedor Šimkovic, CSc., works at the Department of Nuclear Physics and Biophysics, Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, Comenius University in Bratislava, where he leads a team of young scientists and doctoral students. As part of his scientific work, he deals with neutrinos, which are among the most widespread elementary particles in the universe. They arise in nuclear reactions in the Sun (in the stars), in the collisions of cosmic rays with our atmosphere, in the decay of heavy nuclei inside the Earth, but also in our bodies.

In his research, Šimkovic uses atomic nuclei as a laboratory to study the fundamental properties of neutrinos. Its activities cover the fields of atomic physics, nuclear physics and particle physics, with an expansion into astrophysics. These areas of research are interconnected by a unique process of neutron-free double beta decay of nuclei (0vββ), which has not yet been observed and is of great interest to the scientific community. Its aim is a comprehensive theoretical description of this process in connection with the issue of theories of grand unification, the structure of nuclei and atoms.

Fedor Šimkovic’s portfolio also includes a number of international collaborations. He gained most of his scientific contacts during stays at Karls-Eberhard University in Tübingen, Germany. Cooperation with the International Institute of Technical and Experimental Physics of the Czech Technical University in Prague is also very valuable for him.

Šimkovic has published many articles with foreign colleagues, for example from CALTECH, the University of Ioannina, the University of Valparaiso, University College London, the ITEP Institute in Moscow and many others. For the last seven years, he has been one of the main organizers of the Bruno Pontecorv International Summer School in the field of neutrino physics, at which renowned scientists give lectures.

Tamás Csanádi, laureate in the category Outstanding Young Scientist under 35 category
MSc. Tamás Csanádi, PhD., from the Institute of Materials Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice, investigates the deformation behavior of ceramics on a micro / nano scale in order to develop new advanced structural ceramics with improved plasticity. As a result, the materials can have increased reliability, and could thus serve as an alternative to metals, but with a higher melting point and better hardness and strength.

The new structural ceramics could improve quality and durability of a number of types of machinery – usually fabricated from metal. In addition, the ceramics could be used as a protective layer for materials exposed to extremely high temperatures (above 2000°C) – as metals cannot withstand such temperatures.
One of  Csanádi’s greatest achievements has been the discovery that on a microscopic scale and under specific conditions, grains of ceramic material can deform. Using micro / nanomechanical testing, he found that ceramics were not as brittle as thought and even likely to bend. The goal of this research is to figure out how to achieve this behavior on a larger scale, and to enable the production of materials of required size(s).  Csanádi began his doctoral studies at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest and continued his research activities at the Institute of Materials Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice.

Ivan Varga, laureate in the category Outstanding University Teacher
Ivan Varga works at the Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. His research team was one of the first in the world to describe the wide lymphatic spaces in the fallopian tube wall and the occurrence of specialized immune system cells suppressing defense reactions in the fallopian tube lining. The team now builds on this basic research and explores how the new knowledge could be used to treat female infertility. They also managed to confirm the connection between some congenital heart defects and altered microscopic structures in children.

In recent years, Ivan Varga has also been intensively involved in the innovation of nomenclature used in microscopic anatomy. Within the framework of the international expert program FIPAT, he and his team strive to help unify nomenclature worldwide – with scientists from other countries – so that experts, regardless of their focus or nationality, can always communicate precisely. Varga perceives pedagogical and scientific work at research universities as connected vessels, as teachers provide students with the latest knowledge, to which they also contribute through their own research. In his view, developing disciplines are necessary to pass on the latest information. He thinks that a good teacher must highlight the vast amount of knowledge that the student will use in practice. He identifies with his father’s life credo: that it would be a tragedy if students were not smarter than their teachers.

Richard Marko, CEO of ESET, comments that “all the winners, but also the finalists of the award, are an example of how contemporary science in Slovakia should look. Their scientific work is connected to international research and looks at problems from the perspective of multiple scientific disciplines. Their research also corresponds to current problems faced by both Slovaks and the international community at large. I congratulate the winners and wish them further success in their scientific work.” You can find more information at www.esetscienceaward.sk

World leaders and citizens must listen to scientists to solve global crises, says Nobel Laureate Kip Thorne

Science is key to solving global problems such as pandemics and climate change, but we need leaders who listen to science. Physics professor and Nobel Prize Laureate Kip Thorne, who chaired the international jury of the ESET Science Award, called for respect for science in his speech. The ESET Science Award is an ambitious project run by global cybersecurity company ESET, which recognizes the best scientists in Slovakia whose work makes a difference on a global scale.

Bratislava, Slovakia, October 15 – Professor Kip Thorne received the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics for the first direct detection of gravitational waves whose signal was generated by the collision of two black holes 1.3 billion years ago. Professor Thorne is not only a phenomenal scientist, but he also consulted on and co-authored Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film Interstellar.

In his latest speech as the ESET Science Award international jury chair, Professor Thorne pointed out the importance of listening to scientists and respecting scientific knowledge.

“Science and technology based on scientific research are key to solving problems such as pandemics or climate change. But I consider it equally important to encourage the respect of politicians and the public for science and scientists.”

Professor Thorne reiterated that viral diseases are one of humanity’s most serious problems today. “Many countries have ignored the voice of scientists in dealing with the pandemic. Slovakia can be a positive example for the world, on how scientific solutions can save many lives,” he explained with regards to the current COVID-19 situation, while pointing out the original Slovak research on the coronavirus.

Funded by the ESET Foundation, a team of Slovak scientists developed their own internationally validated COVID-19 tests. In a rapid response to the pandemic, the team donated 100,000 kits for routine testing to the Slovak Republic and has made the tests available to other countries.

Since joining as the chair of the international jury of the second year of the ESET Science Award, Professor Thorne is dedicated to support the initiative in the coming years. The ESET Foundation and ESET continue in their goal of supporting and recognizing scientists and researchers in Slovakia – and, in the future, in other parts of the world.

“We need new generations of leaders who will lead the world to responsible and science-based solutions. The key benefit of the ESET Science Award is this inspiration and recognition of how important science is for society,” said Professor Thorne.

The ESET Science Award is held under the auspices of Zuzana Čaputová, President of the Slovak Republic, and has received praise from international personalities such as Sir Roger Penrose, who is one the recipients of the 2020 Nobel Prize for Physics.

“I believe that the authority of science and scientists should be taken into account in the public discourse too. Because not only do we live in an era with a global pandemic, but also an infodemic, one which is defined by the systematic production of misinformation,” Mrs. Čaputová said in her opening address.

At the ceremony, Fedor Šimkovic was named laureate in the category Outstanding Personality of Slovak Science, Tamás Csanádi was named winner in the Outstanding Young Scientist under 35 category, and Ivan Varga became the Outstanding University Teacher laureate.

The ESET Science Award jury comprised other excellent scientists and researchers, namely, the Czech chemist Hana Dvořáková, British biologist Fiona Watt, German physicist Rolf-Dieter Heuer (former Director of CERN), German chemist Ralf Riedel and Hungarian mathematician Tibor Krisztin.

With just one click, the button allows the user to flip the image when switching between document sharing and face to face communication, ensuring the image is always the right side up. Despite its compact design, DO-CAM’s 8MP Sony CMOS image sensor allows for exceptional image quality, fast focus, and excellent color reproduction.

Weighing in at just 0.74lbs whilst having the footprint of a small handheld pencil case, DO-CAM is extremely convenient to use, store, and carry around. The ability to act as both a document camera and a webcam makes DO-CAM an extremely versatile yet powerful device. Whether it’s sharing designs or conducting an online meeting, DO-CAM is able to seamlessly transition between the two angles to ensure maximum efficiency.

Thanks to its brightly colored nature, this special edition of DO-CAM is also a great fit for low-vision users due to both its portability and visibility. Its compact, lightweight design and high image quality make DO-CAM a reliable and portable electronic magnifier for low-vision users who are regularly packed with other equipment.

The DO-CAM Creator’s Edition is now available for $189 and can be purchased through IPEVO’s Online Store. Discounted pricing and special promotions will be available in the upcoming weeks through IPEVO’s official channels.

ESET support of macOS Big Sur (11)

We will continue to update this article with the latest information about macOS Big Sur (11) support in ESET products.

Applies to the following products:
  • ESET Endpoint Security for macOS
  • ESET Endpoint Antivirus for macOS
  • ESET Cyber Security Pro
  • ESET Cyber Security
  • Live installer package for Mac

macOS Big Sur (11) (formerly known as macOS 10.16) is now available in the beta version only. ESET does not currently provide support for the beta version of macOS Big Sur (11).

At ESET, we are working on releasing a new version of our products with macOS Big Sur compatibility before Apple releases the full version. However, Apple has not announced the release date of macOS Big Sur yet.

We have been working on Apple’s mandatory change from Kernel extensions to System extensions for a long time. Still, due to the extensive impact that this change has on the interaction of our software with the operating system, we might not be able to deliver a fully compatible product on the day of the macOS Big Sur (11) release that we expect to be someday in October.

We will release ESET Cloud Administrator Live Installer for Mac later after the macOS Big Sur release.

How to keep your computer protected

To keep your computers protected by ESET, we advise you not to upgrade your computers to macOS Big Sur before upgrading your ESET product to a compatible version.

Upgrade to macOS Big Sur

If you want to upgrade your macOS shortly after release or you are not in control over your macOS update, we are aiming to deliver a compatible version of our products (6.10.x) before the release of the new Big Sur operating system. However, this version will lack the following features:

  • Device control (all products)
  • Web Access protection (all products)
  • Web Control (ESET Endpoint Security for macOS)
  • Parental Control (ESET Cyber Security Pro)
  • Firewall (ESET Endpoint Security for macOS and ESET Cyber Security Pro)

If you are not using any of the features listed above, you are safe to upgrade your Mac to Big Sur after upgrading your ESET product.

If you are using these features, we will be releasing new versions of our products as soon as each of the missing features is ready for release. If you already installed a partially supported version of your ESET product, we recommend keeping it updated to regain the missing features right after their release.

Older macOS support

If you are not planning on upgrading your Mac to Big Sur, version 6.10 of ESET products will fully support macOS 10.12 to macOS 10.15.

I already upgraded my Mac to macOS Big Sur (11) with ESET product version 6.9 and earlier installed.

If you have upgraded your Mac to the beta version of macOS Big Sur and you have ESET product version 6.9 and earlier, your computer will not be protected, and you will receive the following message:

Unsupported macOS version
This ESET product does not support your current version of macOS 10.16.

In this case, we recommend that you upgrade your ESET product to version 6.10 as soon as it is released and keep it updated to regain the missing features right after their release.

I am an administrator managing Macs using ESET Security Management Center (ESMC), and I already upgraded my Macs to macOS Big Sur (11) with ESET product version 6.9 and earlier installed.

ESMC agent is supported on macOS Big Sur, and you will receive product status in ESMC. However, because ESET products for Mac version 6.9 are not supported on Big Sur, you will receive the following status:

Product is installed but it is not running

Your Macs will display the following message:

Unsupported macOS version
This ESET product does not support your current version of macOS 10.16.

In this case, we recommend that you upgrade your ESET product to version 6.10 as soon as it is released and keep it updated to regain the missing features right after their release.

CyberLink and Talma Partner to Integrate FaceMe® Across Operations in Select Latin American Airports

Talma will deploy FaceMe® across select airports it operates in for touchless biometric authentication with health and safety screening of employees

Taipei, Taiwan — October 13, 2020—CyberLink Corp. (5203.TW), a pioneer of AI and facial recognition technologies, today announced a partnership with Talma, a Latin America airport services company, to utilize the FaceMe® AI facial recognition engine for its internal operations. The integration will facilitate identity verification, mask and temperature detection, touchless access control, attendance tracking and workplace capacity control.

Talma’s mission is to deliver vital airport services that guarantee the security, efficiency and quality required by its clients, collaborators and regulators – providing ground assistance services, passenger services, aircraft maintenance and training services.

Talma will begin to deploy the FaceMe® technology throughout the airports in Colombia first and plans to expand across more airports in Latin America. Given increasing social distancing regulations introduced as a result of the COVID pandemic, FaceMe® will not only help Talma keep its employees safe and healthy by ensuring masks are worn and temperatures are checked, but it will also streamline additional workplace management operations.

“Large facilities and airports require a very strict access control environment to ensure the security and safety of employees. FaceMe® is the perfect technology to enable airport service providers to reach operational excellence while meeting newly introduced health and safety guidelines,” said Dr. Jau Huang, CEO and Chairman, CyberLink. “Talma is one of the most trusted airport service operators across Latin America and this partnership speaks volumes to its commitment to not only the productivity and security of its entire workforce, but also their health and safety.”

“We pride ourselves on being an innovative organization always on the search for new technologies, processes and certifications that will truly benefit the airports we operate in,” said Gonzalo Aristizabal, General Manager for Talma Colombia. “CyberLink’s FaceMe® AI biometric engine is the perfect tool for us to streamline access control and health checks, including mask detection and temperature checks, for our staff so they can deliver the highest caliber of service to our airport clients.”
