Engineering Layered Defense for the Boundaryless Enterprise

Engineering Layered Defense for the Boundaryless Enterprise

Elevating and Streamlining Modern Cybersecurity

As digital acceleration redefines how and where we operate, the traditional corporate network perimeter has effectively dissolved. Yet, the core imperative remains unchanged: organizations must safeguard their data, users, and daily operations with absolute consistency—without compounding IT complexity.

The Extinction of the Perimeter

The paradigm of work has fundamentally and permanently shifted. Widespread cloud adoption and digital transformation have erased the distinct borders that once separated internal networks from the outside world.

Despite this, a surprising number of enterprises continue to rely on perimeter-centric strategies. While firewalls—next-generation or otherwise—still have a place in the security arsenal, they are woefully inadequate as standalone solutions. Relying strictly on these legacy defenses creates a dangerous illusion of safety. Worse still, if they are poorly integrated or maintained, they can inadvertently introduce critical vulnerabilities right where robust protection is needed most.

Security in Transit: Zero-Compromise Performance

Scale Computing™ pioneers secure connectivity via a cloud-native SASE architecture, seamlessly fusing SD-WAN capabilities with active threat defense. Traffic is encrypted from end to end and intelligently navigated through global gateways. Automated failover and bi-directional Quality of Service (QoS) guarantee peak performance, even across highly unstable connections.

However, speed is irrelevant without safety. This is why our SASE framework embeds active URL filtering, real-time malware scanning, and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). It delivers frictionless, travel-ready security that protects users as they access corporate and cloud assets from any location worldwide.

Security at Rest: 24/7 Observability and Orchestration

Encrypting active traffic is merely one piece of the puzzle. Edge deployments and internal networks demand relentless visibility and a coordinated, rapid response the moment anomalous behavior is detected. By leveraging always-on monitoring alongside automated detection and response, the system proactively identifies irregularities and neutralizes threats before they escalate into breaches.

Instead of drowning IT departments in alert fatigue, this intelligent oversight provides clear, prioritized remediation paths. It acts as an automated guardian, offering profound peace of mind to organizations that may lack a massive, dedicated security operations center (SOC).

Empowering the Hyper-Mobile Workforce

These disparate technologies converge to perfectly support the modern remote worker. A highly efficient Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) client guarantees encrypted, resilient access to internal resources and hosted applications. Featuring application-aware traffic steering and forward error correction, the connection remains rock-solid regardless of the user’s location.

Combined with around-the-clock network monitoring and automated threat response, employees experience a unified, impenetrable security posture—whether they are navigating an airport, visiting a client site, or operating from a home office.

The Strategic Imperative

Cybersecurity is no longer defined by physical infrastructure; it is dictated by your digital footprint. In a landscape where every user, endpoint, and connection represents a potential vulnerability, defense requires unified orchestration, not fragmented silos. The mandate is clear: deliver radical simplicity and total visibility.

Our objective is to continually innovate ways for organizations to operate swiftly and securely in a borderless world—all without requiring a small army of security analysts.

Because in this new operational reality, comprehensive, layered protection is no longer a corporate luxury. It is an absolute necessity.

ArcGIS Pro on Mac: Parallels Desktop 27 Benchmark Results (2026)

ArcGIS Pro on Mac: Parallels Desktop 27 Benchmark Results (2026)

Engineers, architects, and GIS analysts often prefer Mac hardware, yet remain tethered to professional software built exclusively for Windows. Running graphics-heavy applications like ArcGIS Pro inside a virtual machine traditionally meant compromising on performance. Parallels Desktop 27 fundamentally changes this dynamic by introducing OpenGL 4.3 support native to Apple’s Metal framework, unlocking the true graphical potential of Apple silicon for Windows workloads. Based on internal prerelease testing, the shift to a Metal-backed graphics pipeline delivers immediate, measurable gains for graphics-intensive applications. Massive datasets load faster, 3D scenes navigate smoothly, and the entire virtualized GPU pipeline operates with newfound efficiency.
The Core 2026 Findings:
  • OpenGL Graphics Performance: Up to 2.6x faster on Apple M3 chips (or later) compared to Parallels Desktop 26.
  • ArcGIS Pro 3D Rendering: Completed up to 35% faster.
  • Overall ArcGIS Workflow: Total workflow completion time reduced by up to 24%.

Behind the Numbers: Benchmark Methodology

To ensure isolated graphics testing, the Parallels engineering team maintained strict hardware and virtual machine configurations, comparing prerelease builds of Parallels Desktop 27 directly against version 26. All tests utilized macOS Sequoia hosting Windows 11 on Arm.

Test 1: Synthetic OpenGL Graphics Performance

Using Unigine Valley (in OpenGL mode), this test isolated the performance leap from the deprecated OpenGL driver in version 26 to the new Metal-powered OpenGL 4.3 driver in version 27.
Component Configuration
Host Hardware Mac mini with Apple M4 Pro
Host Memory 68 GB Unified Memory
Guest OS Windows 11 on Arm 25H2 (Build 26200.6584)
VM Specs 8 vCPUs, 16 GB RAM

Test 2: Real-World ArcGIS Pro Workloads

Synthetic tests are helpful, but real-world workflows pay the bills. This test utilized the Esri ArcGIS Pro Performance Assessment Tool v18 (Levels 1 and 2) to measure day-to-day 2D and 3D mapping operations.
Component Configuration
Host Hardware MacBook Pro with Apple M3 Pro
Host Memory 36 GB Unified Memory
Guest OS Windows 11 on Arm 25H2 (Build 26200.6584)
VM Specs 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM

The Performance Leap: Version 26 vs. 27

By swapping out the aging OpenGL framework for a modern, Metal-based OpenGL 4.3 driver, Parallels Desktop 27 removes the historical bottleneck between Windows rendering demands and Apple silicon GPU hardware.
Metric / Workload Parallels Desktop 26 Parallels Desktop 27 (Metal/OpenGL 4.3) Measured Improvement
OpenGL Graphics (Unigine) Legacy OpenGL framework Metal-backed OpenGL 4.3 Up to 2.6x faster
ArcGIS Pro 3D Rendering Legacy OpenGL framework Metal-backed OpenGL 4.3 Up to 35% faster
ArcGIS Workflow Completion Legacy OpenGL framework Metal-backed OpenGL 4.3 Up to 24% faster

The Ripple Effect: Beyond ArcGIS Pro

Apple’s M-series chips have never lacked raw graphics power; the challenge was exposing that power to virtualized Windows software. ArcGIS Pro was selected for this benchmark because its heavy reliance on large terrain models, complex imagery, and interactive 3D spaces perfectly stresses the GPU stack. However, this architectural upgrade reaches far beyond GIS. Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) professionals, along with scientific researchers, rely heavily on OpenGL for interactive viewports and complex CAD assemblies. This update dramatically improves compatibility for a massive portfolio of graphics-heavy Windows tools, laying the critical groundwork for upcoming SOLIDWORKS and AutoCAD support.

Hardware Recommendations for Professional Workloads

Virtualization software is only as capable as the host machine beneath it. If you are provisioning Macs for heavy Windows workflows, keep these realities in mind:
  • Apple M3: The sweet spot for standard workloads. If your day consists of 2D mapping, document creation, and moderate 3D rendering, the M3 handles ArcGIS Pro comfortably without needing a dedicated PC.
  • Apple M4: Built for heavy lifting. The M4 architecture (used in our 2.6x OpenGL benchmark) provides the necessary headroom for massive GIS datasets, complex 3D visualizations, or running multiple VMs simultaneously.
  • Memory is Non-Negotiable: In a virtualized environment, macOS and Windows are actively fighting for the same RAM pool. Large CAD assemblies and imagery datasets devour memory. Prioritize unified memory capacity just as highly as your processor tier when purchasing new hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mastering Shadow AI Detection

Mastering Shadow AI Detection in the Modern Enterprise

Executive Summary: Effective shadow AI detection requires a deep dive into anomalous account behaviors, credential usage, code artifacts, authorization patterns, and third-party SaaS integrations.
Identifying and managing “shadow AI” has rapidly become a critical imperative for IT and security teams. As artificial intelligence embeds itself into the modern workflow, employees are increasingly turning to unsanctioned tools that operate outside of official corporate oversight. A recent IBM-backed study revealed a startling reality: while 80% of U.S. office workers utilize AI in their daily routines, a mere 22% restrict themselves to company-approved platforms. This behavioral shift is even more pronounced among younger demographics, with 35% of Gen Z workers indicating a preference for personal AI tools, compared to just 14% across other age groups. These statistics highlight the explosive growth of shadow AI and the urgent need to detect unvetted intelligence tools.

Decoding Shadow AI

Much like its predecessor, shadow IT—the unauthorized use of software, hardware, or web services—shadow AI refers to the clandestine use of artificial intelligence technologies within the workplace. When corporate-approved AI solutions are perceived as sluggish, inadequate, or simply non-existent, employees inevitably seek out their own alternatives to bridge the productivity gap.

The Origins of the Shadow AI Problem

Because AI delivers immediate, tangible boosts to productivity, workforce adoption is naturally aggressive. In fact, 75% of U.S. professionals report moderate to massive efficiency gains from AI, with roughly a third saving up to 6 hours a week. Consequently, shadow AI usually takes root in mundane, daily tasks. One team member might use a personal Claude or ChatGPT account to summarize meeting notes, while another might unknowingly paste proprietary financial data into a public chatbot to generate a report. Because these browser-based tools are widely accessible, free, and incredibly user-friendly, they easily bypass standard procurement, compliance, and security checkpoints—creating massive organizational blind spots.

Real-World Scenarios of Hidden AI Use

Shadow AI manifests in ways that feel entirely routine to the end-user. Consider these common office scenarios:
  • Sales: An executive feeds prospect notes, pricing margins, and discount strategies into a personal AI account to draft a pitch. The corporate security team has zero visibility into where this sensitive data is being processed or stored.
  • Human Resources: An HR rep uses a public AI assistant to summarize interview transcripts and write performance reviews, inadvertently exposing PII (personally identifiable information) to unvetted external servers.
  • Finance: A financial analyst pastes unreleased quarterly revenue numbers into a chatbot to help generate a narrative for the board. Confidential market data is thus exposed to public commercial models.
  • Development: Software engineers quickly integrate a generative AI API into an internal support tool. Because it doesn’t require a massive infrastructure overhaul, they skip the formal security and compliance reviews.
  • Marketing: A marketing manager simply toggles on a new “AI Assistant” feature built into their existing project management SaaS. Client names and campaign strategies are instantly processed by third-party models that the company’s IT department has never audited.
Because these actions are driven by a desire for efficiency, they appear harmless on the surface. However, they silently generate immense governance and data protection liabilities.

The Challenge of Spotting the Invisible

Detecting unauthorized AI is notoriously difficult because it looks exactly like legitimate web traffic. Traditional Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions are engineered to stop massive data exfiltration, bulk downloads, or obvious file transfers. They are rarely equipped to catch a few lines of proprietary code or a strategic paragraph pasted into an AI prompt. Furthermore, because these interactions flow through trusted browser sessions, encrypted SaaS traffic, and authorized APIs, static security rules and basic blocklists are ineffective. To uncover shadow AI, organizations must pivot toward dynamic, context-aware detection strategies that analyze behavior rather than just network signatures.

The Hidden Dangers of Unsanctioned AI

The unchecked proliferation of AI tools introduces a spectrum of severe business risks:
  • Data Exposure: Confidential IP and trade secrets pasted into public models can be stored, learned from, and potentially regurgitated to competitors.
  • Rogue Automation: AI agents often require permissions to read, write, or move data across platforms. If deployed without oversight, they could autonomously alter records or forward sensitive files.
  • Regulatory Violations: Processing regulated data (like HIPAA or GDPR-protected information) through unapproved AI can trigger massive financial penalties and legal nightmares.
  • Expanded Attack Surfaces: Unvetted AI integrations introduce unknown vulnerabilities, creating backdoor opportunities for cybercriminals.
  • Reputational Damage: A single leaked document via a shadow AI platform can permanently erode customer and stakeholder trust.
  • Unreliable Decision-Making: If different departments use varying, unvetted AI tools, the business runs the risk of acting on hallucinated, inaccurate, or inconsistent outputs.

5 Blueprints for Detecting Shadow AI

To illuminate shadow AI, security teams must look beyond obvious domain blocking and analyze the behavioral signals behind digital workflows:

1. Analyze Identity Patterns

Audit non-human identities. Look for irregular service accounts, over-privileged OAuth applications, and programmatic identities lacking clear internal ownership. Shadow AI frequently reveals itself through unexpected API activity or automation accounts querying directories.

2. Correlate Secret and Credential Activity

AI integrations require API keys and tokens. Monitor for newly minted API credentials, long-lived tokens being reused across disparate environments, or secrets suddenly appearing in CI/CD pipelines and code repositories without a documented business justification.

3. Inspect Development Artifacts

Catch shadow AI before it hits production. Scan source code, build pipelines, and developer environments for unauthorized external model SDKs, direct API calls to AI services, and unvetted embedding libraries.

4. Monitor Authorization Behavior

Focus on how identities behave. Shadow AI often triggers unusual authorization chains—such as a sudden spike in privilege usage, automation scripts altering access controls, or a single workflow jumping rapidly from IT platforms to cloud APIs.

5. Map SaaS and Third-Party Integrations

AI is frequently smuggled in as a feature within established SaaS platforms. Conduct strict inventories of all third-party integrations and delegated access permissions to ensure shadow AI isn’t hiding inside a previously approved application.

Post-Detection: Governing the AI Landscape

Detection is merely step one. Once identified, organizations must triage unapproved AI based on its utility versus its risk profile. High-risk instances—those involving broad privileges or sensitive data—must be blocked immediately by revoking tokens and disabling access paths. Moderately risky tools might be contained, restricting their permissions to a safe, isolated baseline. Finally, if a shadow AI tool proves highly valuable and secure, it can be formally sanctioned and brought under the umbrella of official IT monitoring.

NordPass Q1 2026 Update

Q1 2026 in Review: Accelerating Security and Usability with NordPass

As we close the first quarter of 2026, NordPass continues its trajectory of rapid innovation. This quarter’s engineering efforts were strictly focused on fortifying our security architecture and refining the user experience for enterprise environments.

Below is a comprehensive overview of our latest administrative controls, end-user enhancements, threat intelligence research, and strategic insights from the Nord Security Business Suite.

Webinar: Building on 2025 to Secure 2026

While 2025 was a milestone year, 2026 demands an even stronger defensive posture. We recently convened experts across NordLayer, NordPass, and NordStellar to analyze last year’s critical releases and preview our upcoming roadmap. To understand how the Nord Security Business Suite is evolving to neutralize modern cyber risks—featuring everything from core product updates to advanced, multi-layered security frameworks—we highly recommend reviewing the webinar recording.

Enterprise-Grade Administrative Enhancements

This quarter, we introduced several powerful features designed to give IT and Security administrators granular control over organizational data and access lifecycles.

Granular Hierarchy via Nested Shared Folders

To better accommodate complex organizational structures, Enterprise plan users can now utilize a 2-level deep Subfolder architecture within Shared Folders. This enhancement allows teams to build a logical, cascading hierarchy that directly mirrors their internal departmental structures.

To ensure streamlined governance, access permissions (Edit, Share, View, or Autofill-Only) are dictated at the parent Shared Folder level. These permissions automatically inherit downward to all nested subfolders, ensuring that the folder owner retains absolute oversight and uncompromising control over the entire directory tree.

Centralized Sharing Policies

Ad-hoc credential sharing frequently leads to sprawling, unmanageable access logs and heightened data exposure risks. To mitigate this, we have deployed centralized Sharing settings, empowering administrators to strictly dictate how assets are shared internally and externally.

Administrators can now enforce rules by specific roles or individuals—covering single-item sharing, entire folders, or external guest access. By mapping permissions directly to the principle of least privilege, organizations can systematically prevent accidental data overexposure. Furthermore, as employees transition roles, their access is automatically updated based on their new group alignments, drastically reducing the burden of manual audits and eliminating orphaned shares.

Automated Onboarding with Domain Reservation

Preventing shadow IT and rogue accounts is now fully automated. Through our new Domain Reservation feature, administrators can officially reserve their corporate email domains within NordPass. Once reserved, any employee attempting to register a personal account or join a different organization using a corporate email will be automatically redirected to your official corporate environment.

Managed directly within the Business Admin Panel—without the need for Support intervention—this feature ensures total sovereignty over your organization’s digital footprint. It also accelerates onboarding; users with active invitations bypass account-type selections and are seamlessly dropped into their pre-configured corporate workspaces.

Seamless Asset Transfer During Offboarding

Employee offboarding is a high-risk operational phase where critical access can easily be lost. We have upgraded our Items Transfer protocol to automatically encompass Shared Folders alongside personal vault items. When an administrator deletes a user, ownership of their personal items and any Shared Folders they managed is instantly reassigned to a designated successor. Folder names, permissions, and nested structures are preserved perfectly, ensuring absolute business continuity without the need for manual reconfiguration.

Comprehensive Auditing via Member List Exports

To facilitate rapid compliance audits and team management, Organization Owners and Admins can now export their complete user directory into a structured CSV file. Initiated directly from the Members page, this comprehensive report details:

  • User Telemetry: Email addresses, active roles, and current account statuses (Active, Pending, Suspended).
  • Group Mapping: Complete visibility into the specific groups assigned to each user.
  • Provisioning Insights: Data on how the user was onboarded (manual invitation vs. automated provisioning system, including the specific provider).
  • Activity Logs: Precise timestamps of each member’s most recent platform activity.

Refining the End-User Experience

Native iOS Credential Capture

For users operating on iOS 26.2+ (with NordPass 4.10.1+), we have directly integrated our autofill extension with Apple’s latest Password Manager APIs. The NordPass application now autonomously detects three specific system events: the generation of a new password, the registration of a new account, and the successful login using existing credentials. Upon detection, NordPass instantly intercepts the payload and prompts the “Add item” screen, allowing users to save credentials natively without manual duplication.

Context-Aware Autofill Interface

To reduce visual clutter and maintain a pristine digital workspace, we have refined the behavior of our autofill icons. Rather than remaining persistently visible across all login and classified fields, the NordPass icon now remains hidden until the user actively clicks or focuses on the specific input field.

Flexible Subscription Upgrades

Scaling your NordPass deployment is now frictionless. Organizations can dynamically upgrade both their plan tier and their billing duration (e.g., shifting from a monthly Team plan to a 2-year Enterprise plan) directly within the dashboard. When extending a billing duration, the new cycle begins immediately, and a prorated credit for any unused portion of the previous cycle is automatically applied to the new invoice.

Additional Workflow Optimizations

  • Enhanced Keyboard Navigation: In-page NordPass prompts can now be instantly dismissed via the ESC key.
  • URL-Specific Autofill Controls: Administrators and users can now restrict autofill and autosave functionalities to specific URL routes (rather than just top-level domains), ensuring NordPass only engages exactly where authorized.
  • Visual Autofill Confirmation: Fields successfully populated by NordPass are now subtly highlighted in teal, providing immediate visual verification of data placement.
  • Security Dashboard Upgrades: The Passkey authentication flow has been streamlined to prevent friction during selection. Additionally, users can now directly edit Exposed, Weak, Old, or Reused passwords straight from the Password Health dashboard.

Threat Intelligence: Q1 Data Leak Trends

Proactive security requires actionable intelligence. Earlier this quarter, NordPass and NordStellar published comprehensive research analyzing the evolving trajectory of leaked databases. By examining the most severe breaches of 2025 across targeted countries and specific industries, this intelligence briefing provides security teams with the empirical data necessary to identify and patch vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

Is Your Data the Raw Material for Competitive Advantage

Transforming Compliance Data into a Competitive AI Advantage

A recent client conversation highlighted a fascinating operational shift. Years ago, this organization deployed immutable, independently stored backups strictly as a defensive measure. Driven by regulatory mandates and auditor requirements, it was a classic “check the box” compliance expenditure. Recently, however, while strategizing an enterprise-wide AI rollout, a critical roadblock emerged: How do we guarantee the trustworthiness of the data fueling these models?

They quickly realized that their begrudging compliance investment already provided the exact solution.

This anecdote illustrates a massive market transition. Passive compliance investments, initially made out of strict regulatory obligation, are quietly evolving into the foundational raw material for advanced enterprise AI.

The Accidental AI Infrastructure

The aggressive regulatory wave of recent years—encompassing DORA, NIS2, GDPR, and localized frameworks—forced enterprises to elevate their SaaS data protection strategies. Organizations could debate the technical merits of a backup strategy, but regulatory mandates were non-negotiable. Now, the EU AI Act is raising the stakes even further, enforcing strict requirements on high-risk AI systems regarding data quality, auditability, and documentation.

To satisfy auditors and avoid steep penalties, widespread investments were made in air-gapped, immutable, and independently stored backups. This data is untethered from the primary cloud provider, shielded from upstream disruptions, and carries a complete audit trail. Most leadership teams viewed this solely as the cost of doing business.

However, by securing this data, enterprises inadvertently created a powerful “operational memory.” What originated as a disaster recovery and compliance protocol is now functioning as essential AI infrastructure.

The Data Provenance Imperative

In the art market, provenance—the documented history and unbroken chain of ownership—is precisely what gives a masterpiece its value. Without it, a Picasso is financially worthless. In manufacturing, a steel fabricator demands a mill certificate, and pharmaceutical companies require a certificate of analysis for every raw ingredient. Unverified inputs contaminate the final product, often remaining undetected until it reaches the market.

Enterprise AI operates on this exact same principle. Data provenance is not a novel concept, but the stakes relying upon it are unprecedented. IBM defines data provenance as the historical record of a dataset’s origins, tracked via metadata as it undergoes transformations. It answers critical questions regarding authenticity: who generated the data, what modifications occurred, and who executed those changes.

Your immutable, independently stored backup serves as this definitive provenance record. It is a tamper-proof historical snapshot that remains unalterable by malicious actors, system errors, or platform upgrades. By holding this clean audit record, you hold the verified raw material required for future innovation.

Accelerating AI Readiness Amid Industry Lag

A staggering number of organizations are vastly unprepared for this reality. According to IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report:

  • 68% of breached organizations completely lack AI governance policies.
  • 92% of organizations that suffered an AI-related security incident lacked proper AI access controls.

While competitors scramble to author governance frameworks, establish access controls, and build data lineage from scratch, organizations with immutable backups bypass these initial hurdles. Furthermore, standard data lineage only illustrates the route data took; provenance guarantees that the data arriving at the end of that route can actually be trusted.

When AI models are grounded in data with verified provenance, the resulting outputs inherit that verification. You can trace any algorithmic decision back to its source record, definitively proving to auditors, regulators, or clients that the foundational data was never compromised.

From Defensive Line Item to Strategic Differentiator

The trajectory of data management is accelerating. Gartner projects that by 2028, 75% of enterprises will prioritize SaaS application backup as a critical requirement, a massive leap from roughly 15% in 2024. However, market leadership will not be defined merely by possessing backups; it will be defined by weaponizing that data for strategic use.

Initial compliance-driven spending was pragmatic, not visionary. Yet, the capabilities born from those investments now offer a distinct competitive advantage. The final missing piece has been operationalizing this data securely. This is the exact function of Keepit’s AI Truth Cloud, which rigorously verifies the integrity, authenticity, and provenance of enterprise data before it is ever deployed to train or ground an AI system.

Ultimately, data can only serve as the raw material for your future if you can definitively prove its origin and guarantee it has remained untouched. If you adopted independent, immutable backups simply because a regulator demanded it, you have already secured the foundation for your next major technological advantage.
